For the past number of years all the parents in both my sons classes chip in a couple of pound (2-3£) and buy the teacher a voucher with it or a bunch of flowers - one year was quite generous and we got teacher flowers & voucher! I always think it seems nicer everyone contributing together than getting a load of random gifts. The kids then all make an individual card for a more personal thanks.
Last year I got my oldest sons teachers ( he has 2 that job share) a voucher from Oxfam which would pay for a girl in Africa to be educated for a year? They were half price so I think they were only £10 each and they were very well received.
I don't get an end of year present for doing my job, so why should they? Surely their salary is their reward for their work.
We always just gave shop bought chocolate or shortbread.
It’s just like giving a hairdresser a tip or a waiter a tip - sure they get paid for doing a job but sometimes when you’re really pleased with how someone does their job you gift them something, be it a tip or a small token of appreciation. It’s totally optional of course and I don’t believe teachers expect it as such.
If you are buying chocolate or sweets I can guarantee most of it is being regifted.
I work with a lady who is married to a teacher. At Christmas and end of year he is bought so much chocolate etc. They will never eat it all even with two teenagers in the house. The fancier stuff they keep to regift or consume and everything else is bought into the office for the 60 of us to share. And it normally lasts weeks!!
She bemoans anything that is personalised as they can't get rid of it and after 20+ years teaching he has millions of mugs, pen pots, coasters etc.
She said his favourite gifts are alcohol or vouchers but he would rather families save their money and not buy anything.

My little one's school has asked for no gifts and for a donation for the fund for new playground equipment instead. ( the longest serving teacher is retiring ).
