Without trying to be too much of an armchair psychologist, she clearly has some deep wound/void within her (probably since childhood) that she's vainly trying to fill with money, attention, records, flattery etc. and no matter what she does it cannot ever be satisfied. As soon as she breaks a record or reaches a new height of whatever, the dopamine quickly wears off and she's then chasing the next one. I cannot fathom being as materially abundant as her and still needing more as well as having a chronic need to block all competition from younger artists. I bet you she doesn't even consciously realise that she's attempting to fill a void, she's been doing it for so long that it's just become a part of her personality at this point. I could be wrong but she doesn't strike me as someone who's done or is willing to do serious therapy in order to discover what this hole is and whether doing so could help her stem her obsessive need for validation.

According to the comments, she delayed the release of of the Toy Story song special edition CDs so she could get another #1 and keep Olivia off the top spot. I honestly wouldn't put it past her. I feel like this whole view she has of falling away is also so outdated. Like realistically it was probably a thing a decade or so ago but plenty of women have since proved that you can disappear for a couple of years and do other things and come back to a dedicated fandom and do a world tour or whatever without necessarily feeling like a novelty act
