I just don't get him. He's never looked like someone who wanted to be PM. He doesn't even look or act human and he's so detached that when he speaks is like someone's just pulled a string at the back of his neck.

I can't stand him but I dislike Rayner more; would she automatically take over if he did resign?

in theory yes but more likely the party leadership will conspire ahead of his resignation and she'll resign as deputy at the same time, so that she is free to stand in and focus on the party leadership race herself. He'll say something like "I am resigning today but I'll stay on as leader for three months to keep things running while the party elects a new leader" and someone who doesn't have any aspirations to be leader will take one for the team and slot in as temporary deputy while the party leadership process plays out. Can't remember how long the labour leadership election process is, but they have to consult all the unions that get a vote as well as the party members so it isn't quick. Ange will want to be fully focussed on her leadership bid and not be encumbered by deputy duties during the process.
If she takes over, it will be a bigger disaster than it already is.

Thank Goddess he's finally agreed to a national inquiry into the grooming gangs.
I've recounted my experiences in more detail on other threads so won't rehearse them again here but I came into contact with a grooming gang decades ago. I was already an abused child and very vulnerable. My mate, more vulnerable and already sucked in by them, tried to 'recruit' me as is often the pattern in such abuse cases (the abusers use 'seasoned' victims to recruit 'new' ones; Epstein did similar).
By the grace of a higher power I was able to detach myself after my first encounter. My friend did not.
Survivor and activist Sammy Woodhouse says that the real scandal is not that police ignored it for fear of racism (I agree; that's a red herring) but how many MPs, local councils, local authorities, local charities, local health services were AWARE and sometimes even INVOLVED. The Biradari System probably played a significant role in some areas but that should not be the only focus; 'white' 'british' people were absolutely involved too, very many. The gangs could only have done this through the enablement and wilful ignorance of local authorities and local governments of all types and all levels.
I think that if the inquiry is done properly it will end up being revealed as a national, institutionalised and systemic abuse of vulnerable children on a level even greater than the BBC-enabled mega-scale abuse perpetrated by Saville.
And yes I do worry about social unrest or worse in the aftermath so I hope to hell the inquiry is sensitively and carefully done, not rushed, and reported to the public in a sensible way ie redacted and anonymised where it needs to be.

There was a mention of people being made to give evidence.
I hope (as you imply) that it isn't just the victims who will be pressured to recount again and again what they have endured - the people who need to be forced into giving evidence are all of those in a position of authority who turned a blind eye, or actively enabled, this horror to take place, or who covered up evidence, denied what was before their eyes, made excuses - anything rather than listen to these children.
I don't care who they are - they should have to account for their actions, or lack of them. .
I think if it's a 'statutory inquiry' then witnesses are legally compelled to give evidence if they are called. I don't know whether this one will be statutory or not - if it's not then the Govt will be accused of cover up so I hope it is.
I actually genuinely think that the evidence of the councillors, MPs, social care, healthcare and police is more important than the victims' because, as I say, I believe this was institutionalised abuse.
I appreciate that it will be difficult politically for Labour as most of the known grooming gang systems we know about happened in Labour controlled areas. Which is why the cynic in me wonders if Starmer might try to get away with not making it a statutory inquiry, but a lesser one where any witnesses are voluntary.
If he does, his credibility and electability will be shot - he might as well clear the green benches for Reform. So for the country's sake I hope he makes the right (morally and politically) choice.
