Second job?

Anyone work or have worked a second job alongside a “career job”? I’m thinking about getting one in retail or something but not looked into it too much. I’ve done lots of retail so would be fine with that in the evenings/weekends.

I earn an okay amount but it just seems impossible to save and I have cut my spending back so much it’s really maddening how little I have left. I don’t even have a passport ffs (not like it’s much use atm) and don’t get any beauty treatments/buy clothes like I used to. I feel like I’m just working to keep on top of bills without any spare cash for saving/pension = pointless.

I started a new job in retail and they wrongly put me on the tax code as if it was a second job. I got taxed too much until they sorted it . You may not end up earning as much as you hope

That’s what I’m worried about, I’ll have to see if there’s a calculator or something online to see if it’s worth it. One of the annoying things about being salaried is you can’t do ovies!
You could look at the Xmas parcel sorting for royal mail but fair warning that's back breaking work haha
Haha I wouldn’t mind that! Could double up as a workout 😂

You will need a new tax code, I do temp work alongside my permanent job - you can use this tax calculator to give you an idea of what you'd take home.

I know how you feel though, saving is so hard! My wages basically cover outgoings - its depressing!

Thanks for the link! I really need to do some research into it. How do you find having both jobs? Do you mind me asking what your second one is in?

Just when I think I’m getting into saving territory I have an appliance breakdown or a vet bill to pay and I’m counting down the days until next pay day which is no way to live 😝 I also got extra pay this month due to expenses and student loan have grabbed that so I’m down £60 on what I paid for which is a bill in itself. W*nkers.

O work for the NHS, admin side, so I do extra admin/ward work...however I am part time so this means Im still only working weekdays. I guess with retail you'd have to do weekends. If you can do week days then I'd recommend looking at your local NHS trusts as they may have Bank (temp) staff that they use and you can apply to just do that.

If you already earn over the income threshold which is £12500 (i believe) then you’ll automatically be taxed 20% on your second job. Happened to me when I did election duties.
