Why is the release of documents unprecedented though? It’s been done before in other cases.

I don't know to be honest. Do they usually give journalists access to so many documents outside of an enquiry? I don't know. I haven't followed closely a case like this before where there was extensive social services involvement for years before the murder so I don't know what's normal and what isn't in terms of the timing of the release of the information.

The first article here from the Guardian talks about the court case in which US and BB were given custody of Sara and her brother. There's mention of the social services report having been completed by a relatively new and inexperienced social worker despite the long history of social services involvement with the family and all previous concerns relating to US. There are details of more of the allegations against both US and Olga at various times including that Olga once accepting a caution for biting the child who was removed from them when they were still together. To be honest, this truly looks like a case where all the children would have been better off in care. It may be that US persuaded Sara and her brother to exaggerate Olga's behaviour against them, but unfortunately, I don't think that she was an innocent, nor was she capable of caring for them properly.

This second article relates to the US's father saying that he will fight to keep the children in Pakistan. He claims, somewhat implausibly, that they haven't asked after their parents, and are happy in Pakistan. Not surprisingly, despite the US's admissions in court, he believes that US is innocent and blames BB, saying that she used to scold Sara and beat her. Although he doesn't even seem to want to acknowledge that the beatings were brutal.

Oh, and the press are appealing the decision to grant anonymity to the social workers and the judge involved in the custody case.

If the press win this one, this will have huge repercussions across the system. Children’s Services already have such problems with recruitment and retention because of the huge caseloads, public perception, and the potential for cases to explode like this one. I think it is such a hot potato because in cases like these, it is never one social workers decision. It will be a social worker/managers - multiple/panel, even before it all gets to court. I have no doubt it will be the initial social worker who gets named and shamed, despite the fact he/she is already low down on the list of overseeing professionals.

Is the 20-28 a starting point? I'm just thinking of recent long minimum terms like Thomas Cashman getting 42 years, and Ashley Dale's killers getting 42-47 years. Why would they get so long and not other murderers, esp a father murdering and torturing his own child (I'm guessing guns).

Nah just average murder lengths, starting is dependant on a few other things. As someone else said those murders had other factors making the sentences so significant

Do we know why Sara wasn't able to stay with Olga? Was Olga physical with her too?

I read there was an older child also removed from her care and that she had abused Sara and her sibling. Dont know what is true but she wasnt a stable parent

I've dipped in and out of this thread because it is high profile and so terribly sad. When the judge gave US custody did he and BB have children. I suspect part of the Judges decision making on keeping Sara with them involved keeping all the siblings together. It would be nigh on impossible to find a foster carer to take all 6? siblings in together and Sara clearly had a strong bond with the younger ones

That’s absolutely fine, I actually agree with you, I think he’s more likely to be pushed away because of the severity of his crime.

But I still stand by my last post that OP wasn’t being racist but was using words that US himself did.

I can’t find a source where US said that it was in line with sharia law.

They only considered Olga’s children because Olga couldn’t look after them and US applied to have custody of his children with Olga.
Not all of BB’s children had been born then, they weren’t 6 until 2022

Has anyone seen reporting to mention interpreters? They were requested as English is a second language / to ensure understanding, but US seems to have (unsurprisingly to me) addressed the court and answers questions directly.

Wonder if their police interviews were delayed because of the ‘need’ for interpreters.

US obviously has enough English to get by generally so I wonder if the reporting just hasn’t bothered to mention when he used an interpreter, it might only be for more complex questions. And presumably his brothers English would have been worse given the much less time spent here, but he didn’t speak so we don’t know if he’d have used an interpreter or not.

I think it does. She stated it as fact, when it seems it only came from her own prejudice. But no we don’t all have to agree.
