Does anyone else feel if this were another artist, they'd have been hung out to dry?

People are saying it's not fair to punish someone for simply not knowing something (true!). Yet we see all the time online, if there's other people who don't know something, they don't get the same grace. It's "educate yourself", or some snarky remarks about 'ignorance' or 'privilege' or what have you. It feels like Sabrina is being defended tooth and nail where other people would have been torn a new one.

Yeh I’ve noticed that. I think it’s because she’s at her peak right now but without any other “scandal” to speak of yet. Like with Taylor, people were already bored with her by 2012 and shaming her for dating, so her 2016 cancellation was easier. Same with Chappel Roan, she’s already disliked for so many things (her politics, her boundaries, not being for the male gaze) that the hotel drama was always going to go OTT.

Yeh lots of people don’t like Sabrina’s sexuality but it’s at a level that isn’t threatening to men. The same thing happened with Britney, her overt sexuality was generally fine until the point it was clear she was really having sex and partying (not just in songs). Ditto for mental health/substance issues for Demi Lovato, Mariah, Whitney, a hair cut for Katy Perry, the list goes on. It’s only a matter of time until they turn on Sabrina.

I think her having 4 albums on holywood that did nothing, then she signs to island and suddenly is a hit with this new persona kinda shows it's working.

That said, it’s a jarring image and to be ‘shocked’ at the responses it brought out is a bit tone deaf in this political climate.

I grew up on late 90s and early to mid 00s R&B and Pop music. Is it just me or has music come to be a lot more sexualised? It was never perfect, but back then it was more about the voices and music videos were more creative, or if not particulary creative, they were simple and effective. Nowadays it's all about sex sells rather than pure talent. I dunno, as I say, maybe it's just me.

For example, this is a music video from Amerie in 2002. It has that iconic early 00s feel, and even though she's not fully clothed, she keeps it classy and simple.

You have picked quite a random choice of video to back up the point. But personally I think it’s less sexualised. SC aside, growing up all I heard was “sex sells” whereas now women can do what they want.

Christina Milian Dip it low video is VERY sexual imo, literally writhing around in her underwear and that’s the first example I could think of without thinking about it too much. Christina Aguilera full stop - especially dirrty But yeah I think music / videos especially in RnB were quite gross looking back, loved them at the time though!

The thing that gets me is that men don’t like her. They mock her oversexualized image (in public anyway) and they’re definitely not listening to her music. So who is this marketing geared towards?

I really liked her music in EICS better before Nonsense got successful and she changed her image and music. The tongue in cheek country twang is done better by Kacey Musgrave imo.

Maybe I’m being naive but I saw someone say she’s had her lips done and honestly this difference can be achieved with a good lip combo, I have filler myself and just don’t see it. I think any changes she’s had are probably filler/botox and not surgery

I feel like she’s sounding very country these days. I really enjoyed her last two albums. I don’t think MBF is bad by any means, I like it but seems like she’s changing genre

When I heard tears I was like fuck she done it again.

I agree - I know it was the smaller stage/not in the main show but I thought everything about her performance at the 2023 VMAs was better and felt more authentic to her.

I was just about to say the same, I remember enjoying her VMA pre show performance last year and it’s like now she’s ’made it’ she isn’t trying as hard
