What are people’s thoughts on retinol products and where is a good place to start? I don’t want to waste money on a product that does nothing, but I also don’t want to dive in the deep end with it as I believe you are supposed to start off on a small concentration and work your way up.

I'm currently starting to use the 1% retinol from the ordinary but I went into it too quickly and my face is peeling quite a bit 😅 I patch tested and I used granactive retinol before which didn't really do much so I thought I was hard haha. So I guess advice from someone who doesn't know too much about it, build up to it. To be fair, the ordinary products are pretty cheap so could get the lower % ones then move on to the stronger version if all is good

I’ve been using the ordinary Granactive Retinoid emulsion for a couple of weeks now. I can’t really see a massive difference but don’t expect to in such a short time. I’m wondering when the bottle is done do I then go up a strength?
I’m using it along with buffet serum and Rose hip oil (both by the ordinary) for my night time routine. I do think my skin looks a lot more hydrated than it did before but I’m not expecting miracles to be honest.

The Ordinary is great bc it’s very affordable but once your skin adjusts during the purging process I would switch over to a more effective line. However, I do like TO products. Esp their niacinamide.

Also, putting on or mixing moisturizer with the retinol might help with the peeling while your skin adjusts. And always wear sunscreen during the day even on cloudy days. Super important when using retinol!

Reviving this thread instead of starting a new one. I have a couple of questions -
1) What age did you start using retinol?
2) Is it recommended for sensitive skin - if yes, how did you start introducing it?3
3) What visible effect did it have on your skin?

Started using it at 26. So around 2 years I’ve been using it.

I’ve used La Roche Posay Retinol B3 and currently using Skin + Me subscription. On month 3 at 0.012% tret.

My overall skin tone is even, smaller pores and more ‘glowy’ - can’t comment on fine lines / wrinkles as I haven’t got any (yet)

I use La Roche Posay Redermic R face and eye cream. It’s been good and I haven’t experienced any peeling. I use it at night and only every other night - initially started 2-3 times per week to ease in. May try the No 7 retinol night cream next

I’ve been using retinoids since I was about 31, I’m 34 this month. I have good genes when it comes to ageing but most start using in their 20’s. I wouldn’t bother with over the counter Retinol. Go straight to a Retinoid like Tretinoin. I’d recommend Skin + Me. Prescribed by a dermatologist and monitored closely. £20pm including postage. I’d also recommend Dr Shereene Idriss on Insta who i really trust when it comes to skincare.

I use the Medik8 one there is different levels so start at the lowest one (Crystal 1) introduce 2/3 times a week - I’m on level 3 and I’m 31. Can take 12 weeks to show so stick with it, depends how quick the cell turnover is. Vitamin a which is what retinol is does reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles never too early to start looking after your skin
Also make sure you wear a spf 50 everyday they are the main 2 things that help (also double cleanse everyday lol!) xx
