Quitting a job you’ve just started

Hello all,

ive started a new job in last 2 weeks but have known since first day it was a mistake, basically the role I am doing is not at all what I was told the role is and noticed some other red flags.

I got a call this week offering me a perfect job for me, for a lot more money basically I interviewed for this role a few months back and was not successful I came 2nd and they’ve got funding to expand the team so made contact to ask if I wanted the role.

I want to follow my heart and go for this new job but feel terrible for leaving when I’m still so new in the job!

anyone else ever quit a job after a short time and how did it go for you?

I quit my old job after 3 weeks for a better one and it was the best decision I have ever made! Yeah you're gonna feel bad but at the end of the day it is your life- so go for it! Just think, would you regret passing on the offer, or would you be okay with it?

i’ve learnt in jobs everyone is replaceable, do what makes you happy. if a new job means more money, not a toxic environment.. who cares if you leave shortly after.

Do what’s right for you. Be honest with current employer - you’re early enough in the door to say you’re sorry, it’s not a good match. I’d say better to do so sooner rather than later anyway. It’s pretty perfectly possible to do this without drama and respectfully. They may even be able to get in touch with some of the other candidates that interviewed for your current position as it will likely be so relatively recently. Good luck.

I would walk away without a second thought. If your new employers felt you weren't the right fit, they'd have no problem getting shot of you. Go for the other job, you know it makes sense.

Thanks guys - good to hear others have done the same thing. I feel guilt but like people have said it’s better to be honest and say now!

No but please do it - go for it. They’d let you go instantly if they needed to. The mistake will be to stay.

i honestly stuck at a job for a year that I knew on day 3 was a mistake, and I would never ever do it again. I look back and think why did I cry every morning in the shower but then go into that job?

Always do what's best for you - the current employer will replace you in a heartbeat but you might not get an opportunity like this again. Never worry about what affect it will have on the employer, you've got to do what's best for you.

Exactly this happened to me - I gave in my notice 2/3 weeks after starting a new job. They was shocked, but they were understanding. It was the best thing I could of done. Like you, I knew it was a mistake from the moment I started. Go for it!

I’ve worked with people that have left on day 1..! Usually I would say you have to stick it out and settle but if you’ve been offered a job then just go for it.

No way, don't stick around. You have to make the right decisions for you. Short term you might feel bad, long term you'll know you made the right call.

Go for the new job that sounds like a better match for you. Those kinds of offers don't come often and you'd be mad at yourself for staying in the current job because you felt bad about leaving.
I left a job after about 6 months, I knew after about 3 that it was wrong but it took a while to find a better one - and I've been in the better one for 15 years now. It was the right thing to do.

I accepted the offer of other role and handed in my notice and said I’d do the weeks notice as required and they were shocked but fine with it - they said they didn’t need me to do the week as I’m still in training so was able to finish today and enjoy the weekend!

I def feel like I’ve done the right thing - thanks again so good to read others experiences and know others have felt/done the same!

Definitely do what makes YOU happy. The company you’re currently with will replace you and you’ll be in a better job and feeling happier for it

I quit a job after 3 shifts because it wasn’t what they told me it was, I literally told the one person I was on shift with that I couldn’t do it and went home.

This is currently what I’m thinking over, been in my job now a month, absolutely hate it, most people who work there are related to one another, my mistakes are forever being pulled up all the time or I’m blamed for something I’ve not done, so got offered a job with far better pay for a start nearly £3 more an hour, less stressful too. Go for it.

I am in the same boat right now. I've been in this job just over two weeks and really not enjoying it. I interviewed for another new role last week and this morning I got the job offer to start in January. I'm definitely accepting it as it sounds like a (hopefully) better job for me.

As I'm still within my probationary period, I need to give just one week notice. Feel terrible as they've dedicated so much time in showing me the ropes, plus it's a bad time of year for them to be trying to find a replacement for me. I also hate the awkward convo of handing my notice in!!!

Eeek! Even though it's only via teams, I'm dreading the conversation!!!
