Are you talking about tasks at work?

block your time. Start big - look at your whole day and block time out for individual tasks Over the whole day Then drill down on each task and divide the task up into smaller blocks of time so that you know how long you have to spend doing each thing.
at the start of the day, Spend 5 minutes looking over everything you have to do that day and get yourself prepared, note down what you want to have completed by mid morning/lunch time/mid afternoon and by days end and use that to keep you on track.

i use the app supershift for work shifts, it helps me plan my next few weeks depending on what shifts i have. you can add the hours & break times which makes me feel so productive!

I use Forest so I’m not tempted by my phone.
Also time blocking is a lifesaver for me!

For work things I try and block out time in my diary. This way people know I’m busy and I don’t get approached as much for meetings or chased for emails. I try not to look at emails as soon as I get them- I set aside time for emails once the task I’m looking at is complete. Tackling things one thing at a time works best for me. But I also over-estimate how long things are going to take me so then the pressure doesn’t feel as bad. Say something is going to take 2 hours, I add on an extra hour as buffer. It’s always better to under promise and over deliver. Also I try to not get hung up on if it takes others less time- I work with a few people that are seen as getting things done super quick but I find their work is always rushed and has a lot of mistakes that take longer to rectify in the end. It’s always better to have something 100% right a day late than it is to have something 80% on the day.

I use forest too! I find it hard working from home and not getting distracted, so I find it really helps. I mostly use it for work, and I’ll go through my to do list, and split it into “have to do now”, “have to do soon”, “need to do at some point” and “need to do, and I’ll enjoy it”. I then give myself a balance of things to do in chunks.

I also make sure each day I make sure I’ve got a few “need to do and I’ll enjoy it” things, which I then save and reward myself with doing once I’ve finished a “have to do now”. Helps me get through the have to do stuff. If I don’t have things I can finish, I give myself targets like “grow 4 trees in forest, then you can do a fun thing”. I also find regular breaks make it easier for me to focus on things, so I tend to focus for 25 mins, chill for 5. That might be getting a snack or coffee, putting a load of washing in, going outside

I know that’s mostly work related but I hope some of it helps!

Definitely put in protected time for tasks and only look at your emails at specific times of the day.

I tend to put an out of office on if I’ve got big tasks to do at work and it massively minimises the amount of emails I get. I did this today and said if people needed me urgently then to give me a call. I saw my emails fall by at least half today.

Ooh also, (and assuming it’s work related) our company used teams, the do not disturb/focus time status is a god send. I have it set to it schedules up to 2 hours of ‘focus time’ a day depending on my diary during which all notifications and calls are blocked. I love it

When I was doing my uni dissertation I found it really hard to concentrate and kept drifting off to check Facebook etc then before I knew it a whole half hour had gone by. I read about a system for procrastinators. Work solid for 15 minutes. Then spend 5 minutes checking fb, reading mail online, scrolling insta. Set alarms so you know when to start stop. Any urge you get to start procrastinating during the 15 minutes you can tell yourself that you have less than 15 minutes snd you can do that other thing. It honestly did work.

Love this thread. These tips would help me at home getting housework chores done, however work is a different ball game. The nature of my work means there are near constant interruptions, the phone, people. I struggle to keep focus

Are you a bit of a perfectionist? I hate that word, but exploring perfectionism videos on YT and how it can actually hinder productivity really helped. Also have a look at the Pareto Principle as well if you haven’t already.

I used to use the forest - stay focused app to not use my phone. It’s sort of fun

I found a big thing when you can’t find the will to do something is to give yourself 10-15 minutes in which you sit down and start the task. More often than not, I’d find myself getting on with the task for the next hour or two. It’s a bit of reverse psychology I think since saying you’ll work for the next 30 minutes can sound like a lot of time
