Private cataract surgery

Hello! Sorry, this is a bit niche. Has anyone had cataract surgery done privately? My Mum needs cataract surgery in (I think) both eyes. The NHS waiting time for surgery where she lives is 43 weeks minimum. She feels her sight has worsened even since the optician diagnosed her with cataracts so I’m worried about her quality of life and would like to get at least one done as soon as possible, she is saying one eye is particularly bad and it’s getting her down.
How did you pick who to go with? Costs seem to vary pretty wildly. She needs reading glasses and wouldn’t mind still using them so the ‘basic’ lens to correct seeing things at distance would probably suit her, though I wouldn’t mind exploring the multi focal ones if that’s what she wanted.

Im not 100% sure I can afford this but my Mum is extremely precious to me and she’s struggling with the reduced sight and being on the verge of needing to give up driving, etc. all thoughts welcome!

Im sorry to hear your mum is waiting so long and it's making her anxious. I would do the same for my parents.
I would personally try to go to a surgeon who also has an NHS practice still and does private work.
I would also stick to the bigger private hospital groups e.g Nuffield and they perhaps can do a payment plan - I think they can do monthly installments at the private hospital near me.

Have you tried Moorfields Eye Hospital in London? I had lens implants there several years ago and they were brilliant. I don’t know if they do payment plans or anything like that. Alternatively, the Tunbridge Wells Eye Centre is supposed to be excellent for cataract surgery.

We’re up in Scotland so it’s probably a bit far, although if you’re going to go anywhere, Moorfields is obviously the very best of the best!

My mum has just had both her cataracts done privately. Absolutely brilliant care and very thorough followup. Actual procedure went really well for both eyes (they do them separately) and she's now nicely healed.

If you can afford it or can setup a payment plan to do it, I would definitely recommend it especially as the followup is so good. If you have any specific questions let me know and I'll ask my mum for you :)

Did your Mum use a national private group or was it a bit more local to where you live?
