I feel a bit stupid about birth options I’m only 25 weeks but I want to get my head around what I’m allowed when but my midwife always seams to want to put off a big discussion to later. I want to just see how it goes but get an epidural if it’s really painful because I’m not set on a medication free birth. Can you start in the birth center then do you have to move if you have an epidural?
And is there any truth in it slowing things down? Should I just get on with it? Also if it gets further down the line could it be too late for an epidural? Or should I not worry and just go with the flow on the day?

I've never had to go before I've been let out. And a good job because it's always taken 4-5 days before I go after birth

I think the epidural is too late by 7/8cm
I’ve always found it better without a birth plan as you are not set on something, and if it doesn’t go how you wanted it to go, you can’t be disappointed
Pethidine is a good drug to have if you’re open to it. It’s sent me to sleep with all 3 labours. I had the epidural for the first and third labour
Regarding the epidural slowing things down, when I had it with my last, I couldn’t push for an hour after I got it. I’m not sure why though, so I guess it can slow things down in that sense
ETA just googled about how late it is to have an epidural. Apparently it’s never too late. I think with the second they said that because they knew I didn’t really need it and was coping without. Cheeky gits
I believe most of the time, you have to be certain you don't want an epidural if you're going to a birth centre.
They usually can't give them and won't move you just for one either.
I don't think an epidural slows it down at all as far as I'm aware. It can make the pushing stage longer though simply because normally can't feel how you're pushing ect. So can take a bit longer.
And yes, there is a point where it gets too far on for an epidural as it takes a certain amount of time for it to take affect so they won't allow you one if you're too far. Although I'm not sure what that point is

you usually discuss birth options at 36 week appointment. I still haven’t discussed anything so feel a bit lost and I’m 38+5 tomorrow but seeing midwife tomorrow
things I know for sure though: birth centre is for low risk births and you won’t get an epidural in there, if you want an epidural you will be moved to delivery suite. You can start your birth in the birth centre and then if you want an epidural they’ll transfer you no problem. It’s your decision. For me, I’m just going to see how I go and if I want an epidural then I want one, if not then that’s okay too. I’m not going in with a set decision on it cause I’ve no idea what labour will be like and how I’ll feel in the moment. Very much going with the flow.

I had to bring it up myself with my first too!
oh it was brought up at my 36 week appointment but the midwife was so sure he was breech that she was like ‘oh you’ll be having a section we don’t need to worry about labour.’ And he wasn’t actually breech so oops! I’ll make sure to discuss it tomorrow it’s all good.
Thanks everyone! I’ll have a read about pethidine too. I just feel like I haven't got a clue. Yeah I think I’m like you kitt and just want to see on the day. I think I feel like I need to know I’d get pain relief if I felt like I needed it though.

What's others experience with gas and air? I had an epidural fairly late last time and long story short (I won't go too much into it as it ended up being a traumatic birth) but it didn't really work. They didn't have gas and air either but now the new hospital does so I'm pretty keen to try that this time! Gottaa write down some kind of vague birth wishes soon but it's massively triggering

I ended up getting an epidural, it failed. Also failed with this birth too.
However they let me keep the gas and air this time as I didn't throw up
I think it helped a little

I guess its either this or puking for most people then that sounds hilarious though!@Kitt flip flops will be fine I think. I usually take my Birkenstocks which have no toe post, as if you end up with compression stockings you can’t use a toe post really.
@Nursty I believe spinning babies has info on back to back babies as well as breech. My second was back to back and never turned, but we still had a vaginal birth which was induced (for being overdue) and all done and dusted in approx 8hrs
