So I’d like to start getting into podcasts but don’t even know where to start.
How do you listen to them? Via an app?
Which ones are good for beginners?

I like crime so thinking to start there. But what else would be good to listen to? Or should is it better to watch them.

It's an oldie but if you are into crime the serial podcast by Sarah Koenig about adnan syed/hae min lee is a must. It has its faults but Sarah's storytelling and voice had me hooked episode after episode

Omg i LOVE Joan and Jericha. A comedy podcast is not something I would ever expect to enjoy, or choose to listen to. But I heard a clip on another podcast (the high low) and found it surprisingly funny so checked it out.

WOW. It’s hilarious. Laugh-out-loud-on-the-bus-while-biting-your-tongue-to-not-seem-like-a-maniac hilarious. I urge anyone to listen, even if you think comedy podcasts aren’t your thing. Trust me, they aren’t mine either! It’s also probably important to say it’s VERY rude. Premise is two ‘agony aunts’ giving sex and relationship advice to listeners who write in (fake ones). Obviously the advice is dreadful. But just listen... occasionally you can hear where one of them has broken and they’ve edited around the laughter but in general the two of them do an amazing job.

Dr. Death is a fascinating short podcast series about an incompetent/murderous neurosurgeon.

Stuff You Should Know is one of my favourites; the hosts pick a different subject each episode and just tell you about it. Huge range of subjects, from Charles Manson to one hit wonders. There's over 1000 episodes so you can just scroll through and pick whatever sounds interesting.

Oh No Ross and Carrie - the hosts try to get involved in different cults/fads/scams and report back

By the Book - two women live by a different self-help book each week

Behind the Bastards - pretty full-on to listen to, but really well researched podcast about... bastards, funnily enough. Hitler, L. Ron Hubbard, Jeffrey Epstein, that sort of thing

Judge John Hodgman - John Hodgman (an American humorist, if you haven't heard of him) acts as a judge for lighthearted domestic disputes. My favourite one!

If you have a favourite tv show there might be a podcast about that too - for example, I'm Listening is a great Frasier podcast, and there are 'official' ones for Better Call Saul and The Good Place that are really interesting to listen to.

Oh, one more (yes, I do listen to too many podcasts):

You Must Remember This, a collection of short series about different aspects of early Hollywood, including some true crime stuff. She did a series in November about Disney's Song of the South and it is fascinating; one seriously effed up film.

I find the podcaster's voice quite hard to listen to, but if your app has a setting to speed up her voice a little it's fine.

My favourites are true crime. The psych next door, theres something about pam, cults are all very gripping.

If you have an iPhone, look no further than the podcast app on your phone. You’ll find everything you want there. Android you will have to find a podcast app that works for you and has the stuff you want to listen to. I liked google podcasts for the few months I was on an android recently and found Spotify lacking content and acast one of the worst technically but am not an expert.

I’m more confident saying that if you’re wanting to get into podcasts and unsure where to start, especially with an interest in true crime, it has to be serial (series 1 - important). It’s the king of podcasts - the first really popular one, it influenced the style and content of so many others. I think it deserves the hype - it’s a very facisnating case, balanced reporting, all the subtleties and contradictions are given due attention. You may think you have an idea what’s going on for one episode but it will be turned on it’s head the next.

It has been criticised on a moral basis occasionally. And the parents of the murdered girl have never wanted anything to do with it or the subsequent huge amount of press attention because it’s too painful. That’s understandable of course. I think when listening to serial it’s important to remind yourself they are real people. But at the same time it does have pretty high journalistic standards. Its nothing like the gross sensationalism of the some of the later true crime podcasts it’s inspired.

Sorry for the big essay. My overall point was - look how many options there are open to you ; just in the suggestions above. Overwhelming. So it makes sense to just start at the ‘beginning’ - obviously not really the first, but maybe the most significant...? And it’s just a really enjoyable listen...

Julia is Joan. The daughter is Cardinal!! Nighty Night is back on IPlayer so try and watch, it's usual Julia Davies - hilarious but also like a car crash..your watching through your fingers because she pushes the boundaries so much!! The other brill one was Sally4ever - very risque! But again hilarious. Vicky Pepperdine is so talented too, I met her once in my old job and she absolutely lovely, so so nice! Joanna Scanlon however was a rude cow!
