I think I've heard before its not really possible to do "big" curls for a perm - they fall out very quickly and don't hold. The idea of the tighter curls is they fall out and just become looser and more manageable a few weeks after having it done.
Ah, yes, I imagine that it true. A bit of tightness initially wouldn't bother me, but I'd probably be a bit worried it would just look nothing like I really wanted.

On the other hand, when I look up loose perms, they just look wavy and not particularly curly. Which I would be disappointed in, too.

You might need to find an older hairdresser who can do perms, my hairdresser told me that a lot of younger hairdressers in her salon have never had the chance to learn how to perm
Wow thats sad, I know some people specialise in older clients but to not learn something basic like a perm is insane. I say basic because I used to perm my sisters hair at home a lot, as long as you have roller skills you can perm.

I think you might be best just showing a pic of what you want, just get a spiral perm with larger rods, they are are laid vertically so will give you the tonged curl look rather than the regular perms with lay flat against your head.

You are making me want to txt my hairdresser to see about havng my hair permed now!
Well, I'm glad I'm inspiring someone 😉 Have you had perms before?

I looked up spiral perms. I did actually have one as a young teen back in the late 80's. An article I found did say they suit thicker, coarse hair best. Which is exactly my hair. Found three examples of the permed curls I liked and the ones I didn't.

The first three are perms I really like.

But these, I don't, as I think they have that obviously permed 80's look. The first one looks like mine from 30 yrs ago.

Perms are very popular for boys at the moment. My son has asked for a perm. I use to be a hairdresser back in the day when you would do about 10 perms a day. I did offer to perm his hair 👀He's changed his mind now.🤣

The bigger the perm roller the looser the curl. 80's perms were rolled on smaller rollers. Have a word with your hairdresser. You're probably better off investing in velcro rollers and some roller clips. I use these for my hair. You can get different size rollers. If you want the style to last longer you can use setting lotion.
Thanks. I think it's just the time/effort with rollers. Etc, that puts me off. I get a good curl with tongs, but I really do have very thick hair. I can't do anything with it curl wise of a morning.

Yes, it was the idea of tight little curls that worried me about a perm. If they can do strong curls but bigger/looser that would be really good.

I had my first perm at 7 lol I had one right through to about 13 😂 Mine looked like your second pic of the ones you like.
I actually really loved it, I had long blonde hair so it looked so pretty and then I had cut into a bob like Baby from Dirty Dancing.
