No, I'm not after an 80's bubble perm

But I was wondering, does a modern perm exist?

I love my hair when it has curl in it. But because I have such thick hair it is so time consuming to use wands/tongs. I decided to start making an effort to finger curl it after washing and pin it overnight.

It always has unpredictable results, though. The curls are so tight initially that they would look better as a vintage/retro style but not for day-to-day wear. Tends to look best on day three but can then get very messy looking. Plus, have to keep re-pinning. So, I just end up leaving it.

I'd love more of a permanent curl. Something soft and loose, but do salons even do these types of perms? Do they actually exist or is it just a case of having to manually curl it yourself?

I have a natural curl pattern like Heidi from the Australian Married At First Sight/Nicole Kidman in The Undoing.

A family friend decided she wanted hair like mine, so asked me to go to the hairdresser with her. Her hairdresser was able to perm her hair to get it very similar to mine! She just diffused it with mousse to dry it.

I think perming isn't too dissimilar to chemically straightening your hair, from what I remember? With both procedures they chemically alter the bonds of your hair.

Read this thread with great interest! I grew up hating my hair and getting bad at-home blow outs from my mom (which inevitably ended up being a floofy frizzy mess within minutes). I started wearing my hair naturally once I started uni, and about 5 years ago I really got into maximising my curls by not using harsh shampoo, silicones, etc. It's always so strange but flattering to me when I hear that someone wants or likes curls.

I asked about this a few years ago, but was told it wasn’t worth it because of the upkeep and care for it I might at well curl it.

I have long hair which comes down to the middle of my back and after washing my hair I usually plait it, then leave the plait in for a few days. When I loosen the plait I get these lovely loose curls.

I hope perms come back into fashion. I used to have them during the 80’s, the big hair and big shoulder pads fashion.

How long is your hair? You could always enquire about having a soft perm. You know we just need one trendsetter to bring it back....it could be you lol

Oo-er Don't think I would ever be described as that! My hair is shoulder length and very thick. It does hold a curl well.

You might need to find an older hairdresser who can do perms, my hairdresser told me that a lot of younger hairdressers in her salon have never had the chance to learn how to perm

You should google digital perm/Asian perm. I think it’ll match up with the “modern perm” you’re talking about.

Yeah, I used to have a spiral perm in the late 80's I wasn't sure if Salons still did perms. A looser, softer spiral would be great.

Ergh sorry I didnt even notice my typos!! From what I gather if you want a looser perm you have to go in for a consultation and the price is depending on what you want. I was told that the beachy loose curls wont come out as good as tonging it and that its pricey and damaging thing to do when it shouldnt take too long to do it yourself. Ask next time you go in, see what your stylist says.

Ah, yes, I imagine that it true. A bit of tightness initially wouldn't bother me, but I'd probably be a bit worried it would just look nothing like I really wanted.

On the other hand, when I look up loose perms, they just look wavy and not particularly curly. Which I would be disappointed in, too.

I think you might be best just showing a pic of what you want, just get a spiral perm with larger rods, they are are laid vertically so will give you the tonged curl look rather than the regular perms with lay flat against your head.

You are making me want to txt my hairdresser to see about havng my hair permed now!

Perms are very popular for boys at the moment. My son has asked for a perm. I use to be a hairdresser back in the day when you would do about 10 perms a day. I did offer to perm his hair He's changed his mind now.

The bigger the perm roller the looser the curl. 80's perms were rolled on smaller rollers. Have a word with your hairdresser. You're probably better off investing in velcro rollers and some roller clips. I use these for my hair. You can get different size rollers. If you want the style to last longer you can use setting lotion.

Salons definitely do the full loose perms. I was talking to my hairdresser about it as I used to have a spiral perm in the early 90s, i still love tyhat hair and which it would come back around.

maybe if you find a photo of the look you want and enquire at high end salons -
When they give you quotes they’ll mention the technique used and then you can start your research from there.

It’s hard describing haircuts/styles as
everyone’s idea of curly or big and bouncy is different.

I worked in a hairdressers as a Saturday girl in my teens l( 20+ years ago now). A client with long hair used to get a perm and her hair looked lovely . They didn't like doing it because it was too time consuming and they could have several cut/ finishes in the same time.

I've thought about a perm , I'd love curls like Katie Melua used to have.
