Nits...tips and tricks

Not a glamorous topic I know . Eldest child was scratching her head about three weeks ago, had a look and found a couple of head lice. So treated her that day, along with youngest child and myself and repeated a week later as it said to do on the bottle. In between I bought cheap conditioner and wet combed every other day. Then yesterday I found another louse in her hair . Back to square one. I have some Hedrin to put on later. It’s defeating me. She has bum length hair and it’s taken hours and hours to be right back to square one. It’s not a major infestation at least.
Any pearls of wisdom anyone can share? I’ve ordered the tee tree preventative spray for the future. Will do all the wet combing ect and I’ve told her not to put her head next to friends and avoid hugs ect.

My daughters hair was super long so we had it cut to a more manageable length asap.

It’s grim but picking the eggs out after combing section by section everyday. Combing alone isn’t enough imo.

I suffered badly due to having thick hair I think. Finally stopped when I started dying my hair. Maybe you could cut it and dye it a shade similar to her natural

The Nitty Gritty comb was a game changer for me. I also found sitting under quite a bright light helped me spot hidden tricky to spot eggs. I used to use my phones light to help me look as most eggs tend to be reasonably close to the scalp. Check around the ears, crown and nape of the neck, seems to be where they are found the most.

I’ve got the nitty gritty. I’ve done all our hair with hedrin tonight. Lots of little lice floating in their bath water . Changed pillow cases, used Milton on brushes and hair accessories. Fingers crossed it works this time. Will continue with the wet combing. Thing is the kids have had enough of all the combing. It’s a pain in the a. Has to be done though.

Totally depends how you feel about heat obviously but I also find very hot straighteners right up from the root help

I gave mine a tablet to play on while I did it, keeps their head still so you can get the job done and they are occupied. It also helped me to clip up the bits I had combed so I knew which bits id done and were ‘clear’ if that makes sense. X

Dilute some dettol with water and spray it on the hair, they hate the smell.

Another method is to dilute the dettol again and put directly on the hair after shampooing. Don't rinse. Just hold the hair/head back and cover eyes with a towel.

My friend told me this as her daughter suffered with it so badly. Since doing this,her daughter has not had any nits. They hate the smell and the rest were killed with the dettol.

You’ve just got to go through every section of the head. Lots of sectioning clips and start at the nape of the neck.

My mum used to go a herbal pharmacist (like Holland and Barrats I guess) and she used to buy some absolutely potent stuff that would stink the house out. It worked though successfully every time.

Just make sure when you do use the treatments that your washing towels, bedding, hairbrushes etc otherwise they can come back.

I don’t think there’s many ways to prevent it when they’re young and rubbing heads. Maybe get the hair cut shorter or put into plaits to try and help?

My mum nit combed our heads with conditioner several times a week as children as standard. I have never had nits and my sister got it at around 15 when she was volunteering with kids. Swear by combing! Need to be thorough and every night.

Yep, I did the same with my son, mixed race, hair down to his bum when wet but I nit combed his hair every 3 days for years. It's also imperative that you tell the school so parents can check their kids otherwise it just goes round and round the class.

Oh bless you, it’s such a nightmare. My mum has just said she’s got them and spent the days with my kids yesterday, so may have reinfected them . Pass the wine !!!

I feel your pain, welcome to to the constant state of paranoia stage I’m a hairdresser and still struggle massively there’s no easy way out unfortunately x

Ex primary school teacher here.
Buy a cheap conditioner and smother the head with half the bottle . Leave on for an hour as this smothers the lice. Rinse off and comb through. Always worked for me.

Second this… olive oil will suffocate the people too!
It is a witch to get out though..
