I get what you mean. My mother is quite cold. Not one to ever ask how I am feeling or tell me she loves me. I wouldn’t say we have a bad relationship, but I wouldn’t go to her for emotional support. I always read the cards and pick one that has quite basic words, because a lot of them just feel inappropriate 
I got a minimalistic floral one off thortful the other week because Vodafone had an offer to just pay postage

I usually go to Clinton's, they are the only place so far ive seen that take the piss and are sarcastic, honestly if I didn't get a card taking the piss for someone then they would all wonder what the hell was wrong with me

Its not the gushing part its the prints some are awful not all mums like gardening and afternoon tea!
