Apparently there’s some networks switching to 4/5 G only so older devices will be useless.

Most 3G is already gone. The few remaining networks still offering it (just O2 I *think*) are supposed to be switching off by the end of the year.

3G devices revert to 2G for calls and texts (2G is staying around for a few years yet because the bandwidth/frequency requirements are much simpler and pagers and safety critical stuff still use it). So some 3G device users may not have realised that it is already gone from most networks. They won't be able to do internet once they're back on ye olde 2G. Calls and texts on 2G still work but it's 20+ year old tech and cannot do the call quality of the newer tech.

It's not just the UK - most of the world is turning off 3G and eventually 2G.

Time to think about new phones unless you really do barely use it.

Thanks, I feel less left out now lots of people on reddit are saying how loud it was. I have my balcony door wide open and didn't hear anything from neighbours either

I didn't get the alert. Mr WT says it's because I won't be of any use in the new world as I'm passed child bearing age. Have to say if that's all they want me for it's a relief. He was joking - I think

My mum didn't get it either and I joked it's because she's old and "they're" trying to get rid of the elderly

"Nanny state", an alert warning you that doesn't oblige you to do anything is hardly a nanny state. It not working is one thing but the daily fail is a total joke of a paper

I’d argue that it doesn’t have to work for absolutely everyone to be fair

Chances are that if it doesn’t reach you then you’ll get news through other people or the news themselves which then sort of does its job

it’s not exactly for nuclear attacks as its most likely to be used for extreme weather

Hubby's phone went off, mine didnt, I got the last test alert and haven't messed with any settings. I know it's just a test but in a real emergency i would like to know.

Received my alert just after 3pm. It was quieter than it was the last time.

Mine went off and one of the dogs came running in and her face was pure ‘mummy, what the duck is that’. It was hilarious.

I didn't get a text about it beforehand (as a few people mentioned a couple of pages back) and whilst I knew about it I had completely forgotten - and was driving at the time!! Jumped out of my skin!

I'm on 5G and it didn't come through for me at all. I was asleep at the time so that's probably a good thing in a way, I wouldn't have know what the hell was going on.
