Mirena Coil

I've had both the copper, and the Mirena. Both were agony to get fitted (I've not had kids, which the practitioners explained can make it more painful). I got pregnant with the copper coil in situ, then the mirena embedded itself into my uterus. It was utterly barbaric having it removed. It could just be that they're not compatible with my anatomy, but I would never recommend them to anyone

It was mainly uncomfortable and seemed to take forever - i'd say a bit painful when it went up through the actual cervix.

However, when I had mine fitted, the also took some biopsies as I had a thick uterus lining, so that added to the time/discomfort. Mine was done at the local hospital (the small neighbourhood one not a big main hospital) and as long as I wasn't dreaming it, I recall they pumped water or something to dilate the cervix or something first? It was all as I say, an experience, but one I'm so pleased I had to relieve years of discomfort that I had.

For me? Nope. I had my scheduled smear test first then she whipped it out. Couldn’t find strings at first so had to use some other tool but when I say whipped it out I mean it was done in seconds - no problems what so ever

I’m on my 3rd one and I swear by it!! I have very heavy long periods and mood swings without any contraception, but this is a game changer.

I get a few days pre period with some emotions but nothing crazy, and my periods are now 3-5 days on average and not heavy.

My first one was pain free insertion, the second one caused me a lot of cramping and pain to the point they sent me for a scan to make sure it was inserted correctly (it was), and the 3rd one was completely pain free. I don’t know if that’s dependant on the person fitting it or where you are in your cycle…

Im on my second mirena, I haven't had kids and they are painful to get fitted (second hurt more than the first bizarrely). They are worth it for me though, haven't had a period since the first one was fitted 8 or so years ago. I do have a phantom period week were I get the odd cramp but nothing like pre mirena and no bleeding.

I have depression and anxiety - the mirena improves it in that it takes away the period stress but I still need separate treatment for my mh. Mirena certainly hasn't made it worse in my experience.

I got it last year after considering it for a long time. I really suffered with my periods badly both physically and emotionally. It has changed everything for the better in my experience.

Some bleeding for 2/3 days but nothing like before which was 5-7 days and very heavy.

I had mine done during an operation so was knocked out.

I had mine out earlier this year after having it in for five years. Agree with all this in the post above - exempt I had mine done with no pain relief and fully awake.

It was…. An experience to fit, but absolutely worth it.

I had it fitted more so for heavy really painful periods. Since I had it out my periods last 2-3 days only and I have zero pain to the point it’s a surprise when it starts each month as not even a tiny “prod” to let me know. 🫶

I can’t comment on the mood since its removal as I’m experiencing grief from the loss of a parent and terminal illness of my other so I’m definitely emotionally unstable but couldn’t sensibly tell you how much of that, If any is due to the removal.

Just remember it can come out quicker than it goes in so I’d definitely give it a go based on my experience.

Mirena has now been licensed for 8 years for contraception. 5 if you are using for hormonal.

I have had two Mirenas and now a Kyleena, which needs replacing in December and which, to 90%, I will replace with another Kyleena. Kyleena is a bit smaller than a Mirena and has less hormones, but overall, they worked about the same for me. Hardly ever any bleeding, fewer cramps. Getting them fitted was mainly uncomfortable for me with a minute or so of pain, but worthwhile. I was advised every time to take paracetamol before the insertion, which probably took the edge off.
For me, they work really well, I had been on the pill for several years prior and find the the coils much better. Also never had any pregnancy scares or other problems with them. I do get a yearly checkup, which is standard here and they always confirm the coil is correctly in place.

Had the Marina Coil fitted after unexplained bleeding after sex and between periods. (I did have other tests to try determine reason for the bleeding, without any answer)

Nurses suggested because i'd been on Microgynon since I was 18 and now 35 - it might be changes in hormones, to try another form of contraception and they could fit it same day.

I'm glad I got it the same day because if I'd of researched other's experience, I probably wouldn't have gone through with it.

It was uncomfortable and I had a dull ache for a few days after. Some bleeding for a couple of months, but I haven't had a period since. I do still bleed occasionally after sex so hasn't worked for my particular issues as hoped.

Very low maintenance once you're done. I like not having to remember my pill.

They gave me a card with the date when it runs out, which I keep in my purse - but I asked several times if they remind you and they confirmed they do.

Also, whenever I go for a smear or female check, nurses always let me know they can see my coil is in place/strings. So that's nice piece of mind.

I had the same assurances but I wasn’t contacted or reminded. So just beware

i realised a month after the full 5 years when I was clearing out my paperwork pile and found my little card reminder. Had to wait near on 4 weeks for an appointment to remove it with my local GP

Would recommend a little phone calendar reminder just to keep all bases covered

I've had two, each after pregnancy and inserted at the time of delivery so can't comment on that. Removal was easy though when I wanted baby no2. Have to say its the best form of contraception ive ever been on. My moods are more stable than on the pill, I dont get periods, occasionally spotting but its barely anything to write home about. Think they can stay in for in for like 8 years now if its prevent pregnancy!

I had it fitted in January after 2 horrendous years on the implant.

Fitting was fine, a bit of a quick pain when it went in but I had minimal bleeding and cramps afterwards.

I haven't had any bleeding in the last 9 months however I have had mild period type cramps most days. I have been to the GP who has sent me for a scan (everything where it should be and no obvious cause of pain from anything else) I also have similar issues to what I had on the implant (anxiety, brain fog, bloating, mood swings, non existent libido) but not as severe. This could be down to perimenopause rather than the coil but my GP thinks I'm too young

On the whole I am happy with it, it's sooooo much better than being on the implant, I just wish I didn't have the side effects!

Bringing this thread back alive cause I need advice, I’ve been on a mixture of depo/sayana press since I can remember teens to my thirties now cause the doctors simply refuse to acknowledge I do not need a baby maker nor can I physically handle bleeding out, it just makes me sick (I do not claim to be a good female in that aspect ) absolutely no issues, clinic never seem to worry about how long I’ve been on the jabs, bone health is good. However I did a sayana press like normal the other week and I was certain it wasn’t the full dose at all but still left it. To my utter unfeminine horror, I appear to be bleeding today far from calling the GP in the morning to cry to a poor nurse about my body my choices, do I jab again or simply destroy the worlds stock of mini stars and let it happen until I’m due another jab in April?

I might consider it. I have only just had my last Depo and I know you're not supposed to stay on them for too long anyway so will probably need to find something else and I'm awful at remembering things like the pill

I am just wondering if anyone can give their experience on this? Including them fitting it?
I have been on Depo for the past year but I have CPTSD and is apparently one of the worst things for it.
the doctor has suggested the Mirena coil but the idea has always put me off.
Do you get periods whilst on it and has anyone changed to it due to low moods/emotional issues?
