WTF is happening? Sky news is off air and all flights gounded in Sydney. Never heard of something so wide reaching before

In the UK, Sky News channel is off air due to the outages.

The channel has not been able to broadcast live this morning, the company's executive chairman says.

All flights in 3 big airlines in US grounded!

US airlines issue global ground stop on all flightspublished at 08:31
08:31BREAKING

United, Delta and American Airlines - which are all based in the United States - have issued a "global ground stop" on all of their flights.

Flights that are currently airborne will continue, but no further flights will take off for now.

It’s affected my work computers so twiddling my thumbs at the mo. Nice.

Got a mate that works at Heathrow and that’s all down too.

I live in New Zealand and loads of things are down. Internet banking / using a bank card. All of the hospitals online portals, airports, my husband has come home from work early from his night shift as everything was down!

Sounds so scary! Does that mean you can’t use your card to pay anywhere or get onto online banking?

You can’t use your card to pay with certain banks but they make up the majority of the banks here, the petrol companies have asked to use cash to pay for things. Luckily it’s 8.30pm now so there will be a lot less things being bought! Not sure about buying things via the internet though!

I'm at work and everything is working fine sadly. Just popped to Waitrose though and card payments not working at all so went to the one and only cash point in the town and that's not working either

It's only affecting companies (and orgs within the NHS etc) that
(a) install a security package called Crowdstrike onto their Windows systems, it's one of their regularly-through-the-day updates that have gone bad
and
(b) haven't done their Business Continuity Planning properly (otherwise known as Disaster Recovery / fallback etc) as these security packages going wrong is a completely forseeable event, and they should have things structured so their whole IT isn't knocked out.

Not all companies.

Not sure why the Daily Mail has about ten stories calling it a "global Microsoft outage" and blaming them, just shows the DM are idiots when it comes to tech I guess.

Lots of companies are dependant on systems from others, so if one is down it knocks out others. A bit like dominos.

Here our invoicing and payments systems that we get from other companies are down. Should be back this afternoon they say so a bit annoying for us.

I've got the hair dresses and my friend just said the cash machine is down near it fml 😭
