I have lived in London all my life. We are quite central (between Holland Park and Kensington Gardens) and it is quite pricey. What type of life style were you hoping for? Quiet and a laidback or are you looking for a lively nightlife?

I’ve lived in Clapham and Balham for a long time now. But I grew up in south east London which I personally couldn’t wait to leave. As others have said, the tube used to be busy in the mornings on the northern line but COVID has completely changed it now and it hasn’t been busy for months and months. The nightlife is amazing in Clapham and transport links are great. There’s a small cinema on Clapham high street too.
You're spot on. I moved to London 9 years ago and found it so difficult to make good friends. Most of my colleagues were commuting into Central London from areas outside of London (Surrey, Kent, etc), so they wanted to hop on their trains ASAP to begin their long journeys home as soon as we finished work - the last thing people wanted was to go out for drinks.
I'm not wfh on a permanent basis (cheers, Covid) and we're actually in the process of moving to a village outside of London, where I'm hoping we'll have friendlier neighbours and be able to get involved in the community via village hall events, etc.
Having said that, as some others have said on this thread - North London is gorgeous and I have very much enjoyed my time here. Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Highgate, Winchmore Hill, and Palmers Green are all beautiful and safe (if a little boring). We've appreciated that it's a lot quieter than Central London and has an abundance of parks, independent cafés and cinemas, and farmer's markets.

can anyone advise? My daughter really wants to go to the big Westfield Shopping centre in London! I’m not hugely confident in the whole tube thing is there an app that would guide me to get there? Also we would like to do an overnight stay somewhere that’s not in central London but an hour or so away from Westfield where I could leave my car (so as to avoid clean air charge) and ideally hop on a train to get to our destination hope someone can help any tips very much appreciated

Personally I'd try and temper her expectations of Westfield Stratford. Unless there's somewhere particular she wants to go there, the whole place isn't that great. A lot of the big top floor shop spaces were empty last time I went (post-Arcadia Group collapse really).
As to where to stay outside the ULEZ zone, a lot depends on where you're coming from to be honest and what if anything else you'd like to see and do if you're staying overnight.
Thanks that’s super helpful I wouldn’t be that bothered but she’s all about shopping and I figured least it’s all in one place! We shall see though coming from the midlands so a day Shopping then a nice overnight stay to relax afterwards
Is there a reason she's interested in Westfield Stratford particularly? There's another, bigger and posher, Westfield - Westfield White City in West London which has more shops. White City is also closer to other nice areas of London like Notting Hill.
If going to Westfield White City you could stay somewhere near Bicester village (even if the budget doesn't allow, might be fun to browse) and get a train in from there. If going to Stratford then it depends a bit on how far you want to drive south. Epping is an easy tube ride to Stratford and outside the ULEZ zone but at that point you're practically in London.
I would reiterate Megansnarkle's points. I have been to both Westfields recently and would say that Westfield White City is head and shoulders above the one in Stratford. It's cleaner, has higher end shops (though not all), has an excellent food area. It's far more attractive to shop there. Stratford is absolutely rammed with people with their strollers wandering around aimlessly. The food area is crowded and noisy.
They both have all the shops though. Epping is a nice place to stay if you did decide to go to Stratford and it has the forest. I would also include: Woodford and Wanstead as areas of interest too. You could take the central line to Stratford and White City from those places.

White City has Dephora which guarantee your daughter will be in heaven in. Don't waste your time with scummy Stratford, it's as awful as everyone has said
If you're coming from the Midlands, you could drive to Watford and there is a direct train to shepards bush (southern rail). are you used to driving in london, because if not i would caution driving in unless you are a confident driver used to urban environment. between cyclists, parking charges, 20mph speed limits, LTNs etc, I would advise not to bother driving to London it's a ball ache.
Hi yes it’s Sephora! No I definitely don’t want to anywhere near the Centre of London as I wouldn’t feel confident so i could get a train from Watford that takes me into where the shopping centre is? I defo want to avoid driving near there as it would stress me out but will have a look into these options Thankyou for your help
Yes shepherds bush Station is a few minutes from Westfield. As long as you visit on a non strike day you should be okay. Alternatively you could get the met line from Watford and change (can't remember the station) and get the overground or tube to shepards bush or white city. As someone advised earlier use citymapper, its better than Google maps, tfl etc

I have lived in NW London for thirty four years and like it.I think of London as a series of interconnected small towns. I have seen people grow from childhood and still see them locally as in any city.It just depends on how long you stay in one area.The best part about London is that you could never run out of places to go to lol.Yes, it’s awfully expensive here.
