I started adding an antibacterial laundry cleanser and it fixed this. I had a problem with the dog’s towels and walking shoes smelling dank even after hot washes. It’s just like a disinfectant that goes in the drawer and kills bacteria on clothes and in the drum.

I use Dr Beckmann sheets for detergent as they leave a lovely smell and fabric softener is optional. Then I make sure they dry as quick as possible. The cleanser is not something I’d considered before because it seemed like just another product to add but it works.

I always use soda crystals in every wash. I use less liquid detergent than suggested and then top up to just over the line with soda crystals. I never overfill my machine. If any item of clothing is extra smelly, I apply some liquid detergent directly to the smelliest bit and leave it to soak for an hour or so before washing.

I dry outside as much as possible, if the path is dry, the washing will dry.

I use Vamoosh washing machine cleaner about every two months and clean out the filter then too.

Doing this stopped my machine stinking and made my washing smell cleaner. I thank both my mum and Nancy Birtwhistle for this advice

When you clean the machine make sure you pop the drawer out and give it and the slot it goes into a really good clean as gunk can build up there, when you're not using the machine leave the door open a little bit so it doesn't get musty and mouldy.

Thought I'd cracked it with the cleaned filter (it was gross), change in detergent and addition of sanitiser but now the clothes are back to smelling 😶 been having the heating and dehumidifier on full whack and nothing has changed between this week and last, so no idea what's going on.

Not to derail, but tips on cleaning washing machines greatly received! We have an issue of white/grey smears appearing on clothes so they come out dirtier than they went in!

I’ve cleaned the bottom filter, seal, tray. I’ve run hot cycles and used bleach, soda crystals, washing machine cleaner, white vinegar and nothing has made a difference. I’m at the point where I’m thinking of just replacing the machine although that’s annoying as it’s a good make and still works fine…
I was having this problem but I’ve kind of solved it now by turning the spin down on my washing machine from 1400 to 800. It’s not ideal but it’s better than clothes dirtier than before they went in!
