I've seen a lot of comments about sight reducing after 10 years which I guess would happen naturally anyway, if I do go for it I will be 47 so does that mean my sight would be good for at least 10 years which I would be happy with or would it reduce quicker because of my age?

Only long sight changes after 40, so it won’t change the laser surgery (unless it deteriorates for another reason). The majority of people over 40 need vision correction for reading and because we stare at computer screens so much! Also bear in mind if your cornea’s are very thick and there is minimal scarring, there is potential that you could have laser surgery again after 10 years. I wasn’t so lucky!

Just want to add at the consultation they put in eye drops that dilated my eyes a lot - I think to check the back of the eye. These made my vision bad for most of the day, could both long and short distance. I’d recommend taking someone with you and definitely a driver if you’d be driving there.

I am very tempted but I've been slightly put off. My dad had his cataract done earlier this year. St the pre-op they ask if you've had laser eye surgery and if so they can't treat the cataract.

I’ve never heard that. How old is your father? My mother had cataracts in her 40s, but there is no hereditary/genetic link so you aren’t any likely to get them as any other person!

I should also say I have astigmatism and scarring over the cornea in my good eye now too, so if I were ever to need corrective vision I couldn’t wear a contact lense in it. I probably should have waited until it was more established now I think about it!

My dad is in his 70s now. I don't know if this is something that will change over time as things advance more and more.

I'm just very wary with my eyes. My friend had her lenses replaced that's more appealing to me but 10 years on and into our middle years she's just needing to get glasses for reading and computers.

I had mine done at Ultralase, who were the pioneers I believe. Glad yours all lasted longer though.

I was told my sight would still naturally deteriorate after 40, nothing to do with long or short but I was short sighted and over corrected to be slightly long sighted so who knows if they assumed I knew what they were talking about! I've been quite lucky as I'm 44 now and the only deterioration is my focus which is not related to laser surgery and does not need glasses, it's an age thing.

Things have probably changed so def get an appt. My only piece of advice is to haggle, they will quote you a price but don't accept that!

I had it done about 10 years ago. I think mine was the LASEK? Longer healing time due to dry eyes? I was -3.5 but only in one eye, plus astigmatism (only -0.75 in other eye I think) so could not wear contacts and glasses did not correct my vision. After care was crap but don't regret it. My eye very occasionally hurts when I wake up but for seconds. It was slightly over corrected to long sighted (+1 or something) but with my other eye my sight is now brilliant.
Even after 10 years, my optician rolls her eyes when I go. She said they did too good a job.
I'm mid 40s now so am noticing some deterioration re refocusing but that's age.
You eyes will still deteriorate but from a new starting point.

When I went to the Manchester optical express I think it was just for a consultation they were running really behind. I think I waited an hour and a half or so after my appointment time we had to leave before I was seen as we had somewhere else to be. I saw an assistant for some tests but didn’t actually see the optician.
Was probably just that day was a bad day. I ended up going to the Chester and Liverpool clinic after but mainly because they were easier for me to get to as we only went the Manchester one first since we were going somewhere else that day in Manchester.

I was advised against it as I was only 22 when I requested it, it only lasts 2-10 years in most cases but instead I now use nightlenses which are great! I might consider LAISK in 10 years or so.

My husband had it done 10 years ago and he always says it was the best thing he's done. I think he still has quite clear vision too.

I looked into it for myself but the thought of it is terrifying but then I also try to remind myself of the amount if people who've had it done already!

I asked about this when I had my surgery and they said it wasn’t an issue, so maybe it’s something they’ve discovered more recently. Ah well, can’t take it back now!

Have you tried taking flaxseed supplements it’s meant to help with dry eye. I used it for a bit and it did seem to help and so did my mum. Also hot eye compresses they seemed to help a lot, just not sure how long after you should wait to use them.

I also went to London Vision Clinic and can highly recommend. I had -8.0 in both eyes and astigmatism. Best thing I ever did.

Thank you everyone for your replies, it's very helpful I have been thinking about doing it for years but have never gone for the final push. My main worry was someone telling me to keep my eye still and I know my brain will tell me 'move your eyes, move your eyes' also the healing afterwards sounds quick. I am -6.5 in my left eye and -8.00 in my right so was worried whether that would be too short sighted.
