Kids & Covid

Apologies if there’s a thread about this but had a quick scan and couldn’t see anything.

I’ve just had to order a home testing kit (PCR) for my little girl who’s nearly 4. Has anyone else had to do this on their kid? How bad is it? It’s just me and her at home so I need to get it done.

Also, has anyone’s child had Covid? She’s come home from nursery today with a cough, fell asleep as soon as she got home which she NEVER does and is just completely out of sorts. Her temp is fine. It could just be a cold but obviously worrying. She came back from London a week ago after spending 2 weeks there at her Dads (we live in Scotland)

My 3 year old had covid in January. The test itself was fine. I’d prepped her ahead of doing it and told her I’d be tickling up her nose ( you only have to do nostrils in children). Aside from a nighttime cough you wouldn’t have known she had anything wrong.

I’ve had to get my little one tested a couple of times, she’s 4 and we went to a walk in test centre. I had to do the test on her, and as they’re under a certain age it’s just up the nose (not too far) for 10 seconds each nostril. We had to test as her nursery had a teacher test positive but luckily we had a negative result.

I had done a lateral flow test on her the day before to prepare her for what it would be like. I gave her my phone to distract her and gave her a drink for after and a little treat for being brave.

the home tests have pretty detailed instructions and luckily it’s quite quick to do. Hope all goes well for you and ur little one xx

Oh thank you for your reply!
It’s being delivered today so hopefully it’ll go as well as your little girls did

xx

Good luck - I found the hardest bit was trying to stop her pushing me away with her hands and nearly touching the swab. It took us a good few attempts to get the required time of 10 secs up each nostril as she kept pushing me away 😫

I've had to test my 8 and 6 years old multiple times, my eldest tested positive so we had to test the younger one too, as we came out of isolation for the older, the younger then started displaying symptoms lol. My children are weird though as both weren't bothered by it and whenever i'm doing my tests for work they both ask to do one!

hope your little ones results were okay yesterday

Thanks Mrs Cucumber, haha at them enjoying it. Makes it easier I guess, lucky you!

She was ok for about 3 seconds and then clamped her mouth shut. Managed to talk her round to do a bit more and nostril but not sure it was enough 😬

It was posted off yesterday so just waiting for results. She still has a cough but is definitely improving - she asked to go back to nursery today. I did a self test as been feeling lousy which showed as negative.

I had to get my 5yo tested sort of mid pandemic when not many people I knew had been tested. I didn't know what to expect with the test and had to rush book it as school called me saying I needed to get her tested as she was coughing.

She was distraught tbf, she had no idea what it would be like and it frightened her. I wish I had been able to prepare her but I booked the slot and then had 20 minutes to get there.

The hardest part was the wait. It took 27 hours 🤣 I was frantically googling and mumsnet searching how long people waited. She was negative luckily. X

My then 3 week old had it back in January and had to spend the night in hospital because he was so angry(!), high temperature and wouldn’t feed. Obviously with a baby so young I couldn’t just give him calpol and see how he went but other than a really unsettled 24 hours he was fine.

My 3 and 1 year olds just had cold symptoms and got over it just as they would with a cold.

Hopefully your daughters test comes back negative!

I couldn’t fault the hospital staff - they tested him for everything (lumber puncture and everything 😭) because they didn’t want to just assume it was covid. We spent the night in a lovely side room, I had a fold up bed and the chance for a decent nights sleep for the first time in 3 weeks as the nurses took care of him overnight! By this time he was clearly loads better so I could relax abit!

You’d never know that any of the 3 of them had it now, we were lucky that they got over it really quickly 😊

Bless them all.

My girl’s test came back as negative, she still has her cough though so can’t go back to nursery and it finishes for the summer holidays tomorrow 😢 (we’re in Scotland)

My son has a cough and had a headache yesterday but none today. I have the sniffles and a sore throat but no cough. Both of us are coming up negative on a number of antigen tests. Does that mean we definitely don't have it?

I would say no it doesn't, weirdly we tested my daughter last night and she got a very faint positive. She has a headache, bit of a cough and a slight fever.

Got a proper positive this morning. Me and her dad arw negative

What I would say is swab your throat and nose as there is evidence just doing the nose is not as effective.

If you're really in doubt, book a PCR
