Bloody hell. You’re more patient than me, I’d have said something to them at 4.15pm. Not rude, but just “I have somewhere to be after this, do you have an estimate time for me please?” and if the answer wasn’t within the next 10 minutes I’d have said I’m sorry I can’t wait that long, and left!

they’ve given you terrible service absolutely, but you have to take a wee bit of responsibility for yourself instead of sitting there winding yourself up more. I say this being exactly the same a few years ago and it’s so counterproductive letting yourself get wound up instead of just saying I’m not happy with this/leaving/asking for discount.

Hope the hair was nice for your night out , that they at least gave you discount and enjoy your night!

I think the fact that no one has apologised or explained why they are running late is unacceptable.
If you haven’t paid I would be tempted to leave

You’re too anxious to complain but you’re happy to ask for a discount.... 🧐
Thanks for being a crappy person. I suffer with anxiety and depression. Being able to have conversations with people I don’t know is very difficult for me to the point where if I get worked up. I can have panic attacks. Doing tasks like going to the hair dressers is very hard for me. Just because I want to ask for a discount doesn’t mean I will, but they thought did cross my mind.

Update: managed to get my hair done. I didn’t ask for a discount but I’m now on my way over an hour late. I usually leave a tip but paid and hurried off quick. I have been to this hair dressers before but definitely won’t be going again.

I hope your hair looks nice but I wouldn't be going back there if I was disrespected like that. I cant stand waiting and will only give places and friends 5-10 minutes etc. F that, your time is important too.

You should have just shouted "How much fucking longer...?!"

You really should have got up and said something - you sat there for over an hour allowing them to completely ignore you, and then you say you’re so angry…. I don’t get it? They probably assumed you were happy to wait for them - they told you there was a bit of a wait to be seen, you didn’t ask how long, nor did you explicitly tell them you have somewhere else to be. Granted, they were taking the piss being an hour behind schedule but lord above, you have to stand up for yourself! I would have asked how long the wait was, and if I hadn’t then been seen in half an hour of the appointment I would have got up and said that I would be leaving if I wasn’t going to be seen in the next 5 minutes. I don’t understand what’s to be gained from sitttng there in passive silence for over an hour….?

I think this needs to be a learning curve for you to speak up when you are not happy. I know it can be scary but they were extremely unprofessional. By 4:15 or so, I would have been asking how much longer it would be. If it was an hour, heck even another 20 minutes bringing them to 40 minutes late, I would have left.
What about asking them makes you feel anxious? Do you worry about coming across as "rude"? Because asking a question like that is not rude. I am at the age now though where I don't care what people think lol.

I can see the OP's issue here. I used to get such bad anxiety over things like that cause I have terrible social skills (autism) so wouldn't know how to go about asking. I've got better as I've got older so now I would have said "is everything okay? How long will the wait be as I have somewhere to be?" If it wasn't feasible I'd have just said that I would have to leave and apologise and then said it's fine when they apologised.
It's easy now cause I know the social rules of it so to speak but when I didn't it was a minefield and made me really anxious.

Did they ever apologies ? That's not on. Terrible service. I get your anxiety prevented you from speaking to them in person but it may be worthwhile to provide feedback if they have an email address or social media account. Hopefully it's something they can work on.

Enjoy your night!

I once booked an appointment at a salon I'd never been to before after moving house.
When I arrived it was very busy. I eyeballed all the chairs and no one looked like they were anywhere near the end of getting their hair done. I was asked to take a seat. I did some work emails etc and then realised I'd been sitting there for half an hour.
The receptionist was out the back chatting so I just got up and left.
Twenty minutes later the salon called to remind me of the appointment. I just pressed 'end call' without saying anything and blocked the number.

I went to one of those 'walk in and wait your turn' salons up the road and they did a lovely cut and blow dry. The added bonus was it was £16 quid cheaper than the other place.

have you paid? Could you just leave and chalk it up to a major loss for the petrol money?
I didn’t style my hair properly this morning and will be heading straight there, I can’t really not have it done now. Still not been seen and feel stuck either way :(

When I walked in, they said they were running a little behind. I thought they’d be 20 mins tops, but it’s nearly an hour later. Pissed off is an understatement.

Just walk out and get off to your dinner. No one will notice your hairs not been done honestly.
I haven’t washed it for a week 😂

I’m giving it to 5:15 and will ask. I’ll keep you all updated. I am fuming though, haven’t even been offered a cup of tea…

Update: they washed my hair at 5:10, I’m not sat waiting for it to be blow dried. No apologies for the delay once I went over for it to be washed. Feel like a right idiot and so angry.

I understand exactly what you mean. I don't know appropriate behaviour with things like that so I wouldn't if asking for discount for being made to wait an hour with no apology was appropriate or not. Hairdressers are really hard for me cause I don't do small talk very well but they always try to talk to you (which I understand of course but I'm useless at it.

*when I say appropriate behaviour, I mean like when to complain, complaining, what I should expect to be rectified and how, general rules of conversation. I obviously know appropriate behaviour with things like keeping my clothes on or not swearing. I know not to get my titties out in public 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

So do your legs… to walk out the door and go to another salon 😂

I say this as someone who also suffers from these, that your best bet if you find yourself in that situation is to remove yourself because sitting and getting more wound up internally will not be doing you any favours ❤
I hope you have a lovely night with friends and family, write this off as a bad experience and know that you don’t need to stay / give business to places who treat clients like this.

what does your hair look like? does it need washing or anything? Could you sort it with a bottle of hairspray and a nice up-do with something that you can grab from a chemist? If you're too anxious to complain and can't leave I don't really know what else to suggest. You're justified in complaining you've been sat there an hour!

I also would not have been able to stand up for myself when I was younger. It's only now that I'm 30 that I feel like I can use my voice. It comes with a lot of practice for some. Talking on the phone used to fill me with dread.

OP friends & family honestly wouldn't care and would be happy to just see you.

It’s greasy as hell. I deliberately left it as I knew I would be getting it done today. Since them saying they were running behind when I walked in, no one has said a peep to me. It desperately needs washing and styling. At this rate I’m tempted to go home and just be late, at least I’ll save myself the money. I’m just pissed off I’ve waited over an hour now…

they’re busy so I don’t want to comment, but if I stay I might mention it’s not good to be kept waiting for this long..

I suffer from chronic anxiety. I’m afraid I find things like this challenging…
I know it's easier said than done but try and remember that no one will think you're weird or strange or get angry at you if you ask what's going on with your appointment. Sometimes hairdressers and anyone running to a schedule fall behind but they can end up getting so wrapped up in other things that they don't realise you've been sitting there waiting for ages, and will probably be mortified they forgot. Something like "could I just check if everything's ok for my appointment as I've been waiting for half an hour" - you don't need to storm over and demand an answer!
