How’re you “cutting back” in Corona times?

I love a bit of money saving etc and was wondering how you’re all stretching the pennies further now times are a bit tougher? I’ve started meal planning and only buying what’s on my shopping list, saved a fortune by not picking up random things I fancy. Also only buying new clothes in the sale, I realise there’s nothing I really need but if there is I’m waiting for it in the sale or looking for it on other websites. Bought a Topshop jumper the other day that I wanted and on their site it was still £40 whereas I found it on ASOS for £19.
So share your tips and tricks!

I haven’t made many conscious changes as we are very fortunate to have been able to keep working throughout - however I am definitely buying less clothes. I used to spend around £200 a month on clothes and now it’s probably near to £0! Mostly because I have nowhere to wear them but I also realised I didn’t want to keep contributing to the fast fashion situation. I do still browse depop though but only buy things I really need, and try to get them from more ethical sources! (Except things like underwear, socks etc! Which of course I do just buy from the supermarket)

Deffo meal planning and checking the cupboards before I go shopping helps.
I also always buy a cheap loaf of bread to stick in the freezer so I don't have to go back to the shops for one when I run out in the week.
Saving leftovers from a meal for lunch the next day.
home baking saves money-depending on what you bake.
only buying a few cleaning products- you dont need 1000 products like Hinch etc has got people believing, bleach, a anti bac spray, and a bathroom cleaning product is all I buy then some polish and frebreeze.

As for clothes I've hardly bought any because Ive only being going to the supermarket once a week.

Buying less clothes too! I had a load of bits saved on ASOS the other day, went back to buy them on payday and then realised by the time I’ll be able to go anywhere to wear them, it’ll be a different season anyway! Treated myself to a few pairs of tracksuit bottoms in the sale from Missguided as I’m working from home and living in them at the moment, but other than that I’m on a clothes ban!

Stopping takeaway made a nice change for me, I used to go for it more often. Zero dining out and I've practically stopped drinking as I don't really enjoy the taste and don't miss it; I have a bottle of gin at home that is mostly just chilling in a corner. No more pub outings and no more ridiculous prices for having a few drinks outside! No more impulse purchases as I'm so tired of dealing with online delivery hassle - meet the delivery man in a mask, take the package, disinfect the package, disinfect or wash what's inside the package, discard package, wash/disinfect hands, I'm bored even writing about it. No more commuting expenses i.e. the bus fares or the occasional cab when I was too tired/lazy or the weather was horrible. I have made some purchases in autumn that set my savings back but trying to be sensible again with the new year. I cook at home, eat at home, walk everywhere I can. I also stopped spending so much money on others; I have taken a step back from Secret Santas and collective gifts. I can't really be bothered to spend a fortune on someone's whatever gift that will be forgotten on some shelf a few months later, especially if I know I won't be taken into consideration the same way. My expenses at the moment are the bare minimum (bills, groceries, the occasional necessities.) I also plan to take an inventory of what I have, what I owe and what I need to save for the future months. Keeping a daily spending diary (online or in a notebook) has helped me so much in 2019. Definitely going back to that starting this February.

Oh, I also started doing my own brows instead of going to get them threaded. Never been happier with the shape! Can't see myself ever going back tbh. Takes me 10 minutes once a week to do the touch ups or about 20 minutes if I've let them go for a while. I also do my own nails but I still go for a wax because I just cannot manage the bikini area on my own 😂

Ive not bought any clothes for ages!!
Also, has anyone totted up how much you're saving by not going out to pubs or restaurants?
Even if you do enjoy a drink at home, its a huge difference in price. .

Definitely saving by not going out for meals and not buying clothes (I can't justify buying anything other than loungewear!). Meal planning is a big one too and I'm trying to only buy exactly what I need rather than throwing things in the trolley "just because". Covid taught me that there's always someone out there who needs it more than you do. I used to have cupboards full of toiletries, cleaning products, household items etc and I've been working through my stash or donating them. Also starting tracking all my spending in my diary. It's really surprising how quickly things add up.

I'm not. 😭 Online shopping is really filling a void for me as I feel no pleasure from anything else right now.

I have to get a taxi home on weekends as the city is too dangerous due to lockdown. Only homeless and aggressive people seem to be out, homeless aren't harmful but there are a few that harass me and there's no one around. A fight even broke out at the bus stop the other day and it was scary so that's a nope from me.

I also keep ordering takeaway as I have 0 motivation to cook or take care of myself.

Depression is kicking in. I'll definitely be taking tips from here!
Do we have a recipes thread? I am so bored of my usual meals I think that'd encourage me a bit too.

I do this with bread too! Guarantee if I need extra bread midweek it costs me £20 in “bits” 🤦🏻‍♀️

I recognise the cycle of online shopping. I’d buy stuff to cheer me up, and then while I was waiting for it to arrive I’d buy more 😢

We meal plan but have done since before Covid. We make a list for groceries and stick to it.

Buying bulk items from Costco (toilet paper, paper towels, canned stuff, bread which we freeze, etc). It saves money in the long run.

Exercising at home. We set up a home gym in the basement and I don't see myself going back to the gym. I used to pay $140 a month for a barre studio pass but cancelled it last March. Has saved us a lot! I look back and think it was quite a waste of money but I did enjoy it.

My husband used to get his beard and hair trimmed every 5 weeks or so. That would cost over $100 by the time he paid for the service, tipped and bought product. He now cuts his own hair and beard at home and won't be going back to the barber... Saving us thousands of dollars a year 😅.

I used to get my hair cut every 8 weeks and coloured every 16. I get balayage done so that was expensive around $350. I only went to the hair salon once in 2020 in summer and am going to be cutting back on how often I go. I am booked in for February and that will be it until August or so. I've realised I can go longer. My husband trims my hair at home 😅. So that will save about another grand a year.

So far saving around $3,000+ a year from those three things alone.

We used to eat out every weekend, often having 2 or 3 courses and alcohol which came to over $100 a meal. We now get curbside pickup at the weekend and most often only one course and no alcohol. We also don't eat out during the week anymore. We would sometimes do that before grocery shopping. And we are no longer getting anything from coffee shops. We make nice coffees at home.
So saving loads of money there.

Last one I can think of is gas. My husband is WFH and we are not going out much so are using the vehicles less. Therefore having to fill up the gas tank not as often as before.

We are going to try and make more homemade foods to save money too! I already make a nice focaccia, banana bread, lemon muffins, which all freeze nice. We are going to buy a dehydrator to make our own dried fruit snacks. We are gonna try making our own crisps with potatoes, parsnips and beets too. We also make our own desserts and freeze them so we don't spend much money on those.

Now, our house and grocery bills have gone up a bit. But that's expected.

My biggest saving has come from not being in my office, travelling between meetings and grabbing a coffee. Wander around the shops with my sister would always include breakfast or lunch and coffee. (I REALLY miss this though)

however, not buying coffee daily and lunches at work has saved my a fortune.

I've definitely been here. It's a vicious circle because you buy something to cheer yourself up, then the allure quickly wears off and you need to order something again! Something that helps me is thinking about all the stuff I already own (for instance, if it's a new item of clothing, I ask myself if I already own something similar, same goes for makeup etc.
I like no-fuss dinners for midweek when you're exhausted and can't face cooking. You can even make a big portion of something on a Sunday and reheat it during the week. I often grab a rotisserie chicken on a Sunday and then eat it throughout the week - I'll add the chicken to rice, pasta, into a curry, or a soup. Pinterest and Facebook groups are your best friend for recipes and meal planning!

Honestly I have the biggest collection of clothes and makeup at this point. How many little black crop tops does one person need? And I'm not even going anywhere to wear all this stuff. It just gives me such a rush at the time. I know I don't need the stuff, I just can't help myself. ☹

Thank you! Actually making a big portion and eating later in the week is such a good idea. I love rotisserie chicken so I'll try make some meals with one too, it sounds easy enough and I'll check out Pinterest and FB groups thank you! Never thought of looking on pinterest!

I’m buying less “stuff“ in general... less clothing, alcohol, food, etc. I’m buying more notepads though, as I’m working from home, freelance and can’t steal any from an office 😂 also had to buy a printer...

I haven't bought any clothing... which I really miss as my job is in the industry. Same with make up just using what I've got in all products before I buy anything new. also not using the tube a whole lot or uber. no nail or hair salons or gym membership. so the savings add up.

That’s a good point actually, I’ve bought no makeup since March last year. I’ve worn nothing apart from eyeliner since then either. I had to do a clear out the other day as most of it had gone really smelly 🤢

I’m having to buy post-its, it’s shocking.
