I’d planned to book flights to Japan for cherry blossom season for this year, the most expensive time to go (planning to go in about 8 weeks) however flights (for 5) are eye wateringly expensive (14k for 5 of us, with accommodation to pay for on top, but we’ll do basic air B&B’s and travel round for about 14 days).
Has anyone been at this time of year, and is it worth the huge expense (I’d be funding this out of an inheritance, and it has been a dream to us to go as a whole family, in the spring). I’m so conflicted about the cost and I guess I’m hoping someone says ‘sod it, go for it. It’s worth it the expense for the memories’.
Wow that is expensive. I did a similar trip 2 years ago and our flights were 10k (that was premium flying out with JAL and back with BA but booked as a round trip with BA). It was worth it and I'm so pleased we did it but you have to time it perfectly, we were very slightly too early for the cherry blossoms in Tokyo but did see them in Osaka and Kyoto. We used the bullet train to get between cities which was the best bit and hired a car to drive from Osaka to Kyoto so we could go to Nara and Mount Yoshino.

Wow that’s a lot! Is that premium or business? Surely not economy! However I do know flights to Japan are very expensive at the minute as we are paying £1500pp in October (economy out and premium economy back with BA).
I think the Japanese airlines could be a bit cheaper, JAL and ANA maybe?
Economy with Chinese Eastern (not great reviews for that airline either). Enquired at the Flight Centre and was told they’re the cheapest option at 2,700£ each with a 3 hr stop in Shanghai. Direct is about 3,700£! But that is for 5 of us.
No idea what to do tbh.

I’ve just listened so Simon Calders travel podcast today and he said flights to china or via china are going to go through the roof from Monday when they remove the need for a visa to get into china. If that’s a route you are looking at it may be worth booking earlier rather than later.

Thanks for the heads up. I need to decide what I’m doing and asap!

Have you looked at Skyscanner or Google flights to see if shifting your dates a day or two could be cheaper?

We’re taking our son, who’s a teacher, so there’s zero flexibility unfortunately. Skscanner are coming up pretty much the same cost wise.

Well I did a thing today …. Booked a week in Qatar for 5 at Easter and then booked 2 weeks in Japan at Christmas….all for the price I was quoted for flights to Japan at Cherry blossom time. I just couldn’t justify the cost.

I haven't booked the flights yet, I normally leave them until about August/September time to see what deals come out. Have just the hotel booked for now. You will be there for New Year! That will be amazing.
Yes we were in Thailand this new year and it was fabulous
We were in Krabi , had flown out to surprise our grandkids who were on hols with our son & daughter in law, they had no idea we were flying out there ! It was amazing

I’m headed to Tromsø solo soon to try spot the northern lights and I can’t wait😍 I just wish the Nordic’s/scandi weren’t so expensive though 😭 I’m penny pinching at the moment to make sure I’m not so worried about money while I’m there

Let me know how it goes I've been looking at doing the same for a while but always picked something else. Definitely top 2 on my bucket list though

If you find a black bobble hat at the top of the cable car, can you bring it back for me please. I lost it about 6 years ago but you never know....

I genuinely don't convert the prices when I've visited any of the Scandinavian countries, it's just too painful 😢

Love that. We actually did the same thing with my husbands grandad. He had no idea we were going and then we just landed in the bar at 9pm! We flew into Krabi and then khao lak was about a 2.5 hr drive.

I need some inspiration. I'll be going solo (female) and want to do a group tour. I prefer beachy/island holidays so I can swim and relax. Somewhere with good/unusual wildlife. Budget around £2000 maybe a bit more for 13 nights although this would have to include the time for flights. I've been looking at cheap Galapagos tours which maybe I'd just be able to afford it's just I don't know if the flights would work. San Blas Islands is also top choice but just wondering if anyone else has any ideas. Amazon rainforest was something that looked good too

I’ve done group tours with g adventures and much better adventures and both were very good

I've done a few group tours as well and doing one this year with try travel which I haven't used before. I've been looking at intrepid and g adventures. I just can't decide what country 😆

Costa Rica? I’ve not been but looks interesting.
We used Exodus Adventures for our trip to Jordan and were impressed.

I did think about Costa Rica but I promised a friend I'd go there with her and I want to go alone this time. I've looked at exodus before they seem more expensive but I have always wanted to do one of theirs

Ah. Best wait for your friend to be available for that one.
We did think about Intrepid for the Jordan trip, but saw a deal with Exodus and were impressed with their customer service. The trip was v well organised with a great tour leader. I think I helped that we were with a great group of likeminded people too. I’d definitely recommend them.

Just returned from our trip to Senegal. It was lovely. Unfortunately, due to illness we didn't get to explore as much as we'd hoped but, we enjoyed what we did see.

I had been looking at South America and Antarctica for early 2027 but the dates don't work. I'm looking at Asia late spring instead.
I've found a cruise package deal with flights to Tokyo and 3 nights in Tokyo but I think it would be a lot cheaper to book separately, based on the Emirates flight costs for this May.
For those that have been to Tokyo, it's it easy to navigate transport i.e. Airport to hotel and arrange trips/excursions when there?
We'd disembark in Seoul, has anyone been there, it's it worth staying a few days there?
