Further reflecting on the flight time v destination v duration discussion, I think once upon a time I would've been willing to do the long haul for a short holiday. When I was an employee with a fixed holiday allowance, I would have been restricted so, like a friend who went to the Maldives for 5 nights or @Lucie1001 going to Hong Kong for 5 nights, I think I would have been far more willing. Now that I have no such restriction and have now found travel is more tiring after 50, I'm unwilling.

And, I've booked Senegal :)

Really really intrigued to hear your Senegalese experience!

Does anyone know of alternatives to Maldives? I'd like to visit similar places, but for less expensive. I've heard Sri Lanka has some equally beautiful areas, but not sure if it would be quite the same.

Friends have been to Mauritius and Sri Lanka, both looked stunning!

I have flights booked but now I've been able to an get extra 2 weeks off work. I'm so tempted to see how much it would be to change my flights to a get some extra days

I'd definitely be checking :D
I mean, if you don't ask, you won't know.
Where are you flying? Would it be less expensive to just book a second return flight and not check in for the one you currently have booked?

Indonesia I was thinking this but I wanted to go a early if possible as it was a bit of a rush before my tour starts but I guess I could stay after instead

I'm not sure why I assumed you wanted to return later rather than fly out earlier. Sorry. In theory the previous answer does apply. However, I recall reading something, somewhere and can't be sure this is definitely the case but, if you have a return flight booked and don't fly on the outbound flight, your return flight can automatically be cancelled.

It's definitely a better plan to call the airline. That's definitely a better plan than using my late night ideas :ROFLMAO:

If it's possible, it's usually an administration fee and any increase in fare.

Do any of you find the appeal in the central Asian region and countries? I wouldn't mind visiting the "stans" and the heart of the silk road. I've been reading up on that region and it is fascinating with lots of history. Not to mention the region has great scenery. Not sure how simple it is to travel that region though.

Kyrgyzstan is on my list but don't know if I'll ever actually go. A few people I work with have been in the last two years and it looks amazing

I’m also keen to dk the Stan’s. My list is growing all the time and it’s hard to choose where I want to go to first 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’ve got Vietnam booked for January has anyone been?

I've been to Ho Chi Minh City, only for 2 days, fabulous City. And, the Mekong River was beautiful. I'd highly recommend. I was supposed to visit Nha Trang 2 weeks ago but was scuppered by a typhoon :(

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are so different so it’s worth doing both while you’re flying all that way. The history of Vietnam, especially the last hundred years, is so interesting x

I’m doing a group tour and starting in Hoi An and finishing in Ho Chi Minh. I’m guessing like a lot of countries in area it changes from wet to dry season as you travel around? Think I’ll pack for all weather just in case

Layers, zippy off trousers and waterproofs. You're covered for everything then :)

Vietnam is the one place I desperately want to go! But with having a dog who we won’t leave for more than a week it’s not really do-able for quite a while 😭
