Guy Fawkes Night

Do people really celebrate this anymore or just skip straight to Christmas? When I was younger there used to be bonfire events everywhere but over the years they've got less and less. Now it just seems to be random people letting off fireworks from their gardens. It's not one I've ever been bothered about giving any thought to, had plenty of years when I've stayed in and it has just passed me by

Perhaps I should save my thoughts for the unpopular opinions thread, but my theory is Guy Fawkes was an English historical figure. It has become "unfashionable" to celebrate anything which is English. We don't seem to acknowledge St Georges Day either.
Maybe I am thinking about this too deeply?

Health and safety gone mad.
Local authorities killed bonfire night. Too scared of being sued for something so rather than manage the risks they have clamped down over the years citing health and safety.

There are quite a few organised firework displays near where I live but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy or a bonfire and I’m 30!

They put bonfires so far away from people that you can't get a heat from them anymore

I wish fireworks were either banned or silent - and my dog agrees with me!

I don't mind organised events taking place ONE day of the year, but idiots who let them off starting in October right through November show no compassion towards animals who are so frightened every year.

There's a lot less fireworks in general I think. Usually you'd hear them a lot every night leading up to Nov 5th but hardly any (not that I'm complaining).

Definitely less bonfire nights now it's fenced off and too far away to feel the warmth, because people can't be trusted to use common sense and authorities want zero risk 🙄.

Maybe people are also more into nighttime illuminations? The Kew gardens ones are really good, and sell out so quickly.

The last couple of places I lived used to build big bonfires. I think it might be a council estate thing . They weren't official things , the residents organised them themselves.

One year, we got a new sofa around this time of year and the old one was in the garden cos hubby hadn't got rid of it and these 2 woman both about 5 ft 2 and skinny , came and lifted it out our garden and put it on the bonfire.

Where we live there are still a few organised events that go on, but there does seem to be more and more people having them in their own gardens.
I actually love bonfire night (probably an unpopular opionion) it brings back lovely memories as my grandad always used to take me every year as we lost him recently I will definately be watching a display this year to remember him ❤

I'll be attending one this Friday but only because I'm invited. It's at a club so they're less bothered about health and safety. When I've been before people are still sitting around the fire chatting at like 2am so they've had some decent nights.

Fan of Guy Fawkes night, not a fan of the overpriced, loud tacky music, chavvy bonfire events.
Give me traditional bonfire, fireworks, hot dogs and jacket potatoes in the garden.

Despise bonfire night and the nonsense fireworks and the morons that let them off for weeks.

Every year at this time I am nearly constantly chatting to owners about the best way to manage their pets fear, recommending drugs that they have to use to dope up their dogs so they don't sit and quiver all night.

My dog is deaf now (thankgod). But I normally have to use diazepam, 2 different types of over the counter anxiety medications, close all the curtains/blinds, play classical FM too loud and have have to sleep on the floor with her on occasions.

As I said. I despise it.

Many displays have been cancelled I heard on my local news this morning.

Still doing displays here, our town cancelled, apparently the bs excuse was "covid" and they didn't want a lot of people crowding an they also cancelled Xmas light switch on for the same reason, but yet its perfectly fine to have fun fairs an some stupid giant mummy walking around town which all draw in crowds, so in other words there was no back handers with money being given to the town for the bonfire night or Xmas lights on so they cancelled it, but other towns are all still doing them

Usually we get fireworks, it isnt much an we have a little get together with friends, it's mostly a excuse for some food an drink with like 10 fireworks thrown in lol but this year we will have my neice so we are going get the low noise pack to see how she is, it's like 7 fountains an pretty quiet, she's only 10 months an likes sparkly things so we will sit her at the window an let her watch them

Not a fan. I don’t mind organised events on the night but it’s never just one night. People set them off as soon as Halloween has ended, right up until and beyond the 5th. It’s frightening for animals (I’ve already heard of two incidences locally where someone’s dog has died of a heart attack due to the noise of fireworks going off), children with sensory issues, elderly people, and those with military-related PTSD. Plus it’s just bleeping annoying hearing bangs and booms all night long.

still loads of displays where I live. The big council display and then sports clubs do their own which is all honesty does seem a bit like uncle John bought some fireworks and is letting them off in a field but I absolutely love bonfire night, although it does seem very British to stand in the cold, quite bored for most of it let's face it, and pay far too much for a drink and a hot dog 🤣
Also I'm still not 100% sure why we celebrate it? Is it because Guy Fawkes tried to blow up parliament or because he failed to blow up parliament and got caught?

I don’t think people should be allowed to buy fireworks! Save them for organised events. I had an elderly relative who had a lit firework pushed through her letterbox a few years ago and it was awful how somebody could think to do that!

I’ve been to a few organised firework displays / bonfires and they’ve been good. Quite overpriced though. And you always take pictures of fireworks that you never look at again 😂

Because he was caught and then tortured to death. So an effigy is thrown on the bonfire for good measure.
