Gladiators #2

Steel said the Gladiators can refuse to do certain events. He says he won’t do Unleashed as he has a bad ankle. Surprised Apollo didn’t do it. I get the feeling seeing as it’s always the same fee that do Unleashed it’s not a popular event for the Gladiators
I think this is the reason why we’ve had the same rotation of Gladiators of doing The Edge for three seasons. Only about 8 out of 18 have done it.

Great finale, although I wasn’t quite convinced there wasn’t some rigging going on. The cutting down of the time for Gauntlet and the headstart on Unleash felt odd but didn’t even seem like the Gladiators in the former were even trying. Even Electro seemed to not be as quick as normal, same with putting a clearly injured Phantom on Unleash.

I liked Emily and Naomi so I was going to be pleased with whatever the outcome. The male contenders less so.

I don’t think adding more Gladiators to the roster is a particularly good idea. There’s too many as there is. If they add 2 more that’s 20 Gladiators. You’d barely see some of them if they were all fit and healthy. I they’ve just been very unlucky with the amount of injuries in a single season; next season might have minimal injuries.

What events would we like to return for season 4? Skytrak and Swingshot are ripe for returns I’m hoping we’ll see less of Collision and Destruction next season as well. A revamp of Gauntlet is required; longer zones and none of this points per zone nonsense. A more difficult Wall is a must too.

Yeah I think gauntlet is rubbish! Honestly I think most of the events have lost their shine now and I often find I tune out of watching them now I think about it.
id quite like to see pyramid but it was dangerous AF for everyone wasn’t it?

The games are getting a bit repetitive. They don't do Power Ball very much, probably because someone always seems to get injured doing it. Also, The Ring. They made a big deal of Atlaspheres but that has barely been done either.

I do like Everest, particularly once they tweaked the timing on it. But I do think they need to bring in some new games and actually do them.

From what I can remember, two Gladiators were injured on TV doing Pyramid (Amazon and Rhino) and one during live shows (Jet). When you consider how much it was used, the proportion of injuries was relatively small. Same with Pole Axe. However, they were dangerous events in reality. Rhino returned after injury. Amazon was supposed to in the 1997 series but couldn’t due to insurance issues and Zodiac was meant to but got pregnant and never returned. Jet was meant to return in the 1999 mini series but couldn’t due to insurance and budget issues. I guess it’s a case if the producers want to expose themselves to the risk. Given that The Edge, Powerball, Hang Tough have all had injuries, I bet the producers are just willing to take risks on some games but not others.

The event pool is fine, but they should prioritise some events over others (Hang Tough, Powerball, The Edge, The Ring, Everest) and tweak some of the ones they have. For example, Gauntlet is too short and far too stop and start. The Wall is too easy. Atlaspheres is embarrassing as the spheres are being played on slippery floors. The Duel platforms are too close together. Sort those out and they’ll be fine to play.

I also think some games are just too short in general. The Wall and Gauntlet are good examples. Making Suspension Bridge about pushing and getting to the other side makes a poor contest as well; make it about an actual battle might help.

I liked…. Tilt? I think it was tilt. Like dual but the platform tilted. I don’t mind the wall but gauntlet is just so dull.

I loved Tilt as well. It was a fun game. But another where two significant injuries - Panther and Nightshade - was its death knell. Sadly. They’ve already got a Tilt-like game in Everest, but they could tweak it to be like the US Tug-o-War where the platforms were equal height.

Ooh I've been wanting Swingshot to come back forever! I loved that one when I was a kid! They could get rid Gauntlet and I wouldn't be bothered, though I'd like to see more of Powerball.

The old games were good. The one where there was the big ball in the air and they had to scrabble round it where the gladiator had to take the tag from their back. No idea what that was called. Also I loved the one where they had to run between targets and shoot things while being fired at by the gladiator with tennis ball. Not sure you’d be able to do that now though.

I was showing my kids videos on YouTube of Pyramid and it was pretty brutal! Not a chance would it pass these days

Danger Zone! I'd completely forgotten about that one!

They were Pendulum and Danger Zone.
Loved the former, the latter not so much.

They were going to road test Pendulum in the 90s live shows at the Sheffield Arena, but it didn’t fit so sadly, unless they make it smaller, it won’t come back. Would love it to, though.

I agree with all of this. I could have written your post!

I hate Gauntlet now. It’s far too easy and the contenders get points even if they don’t finish. If the Gladiators pin, Mark yells at them so what’s the point? I really think the Gladiators are told to go easy for that event. (And a few others)

I think this series there’s been a fair bit of rigging in events to keep contenders scores relatively similar.

I would love to see Skytrak back but I think seeing as we get the same roster on The Edge it would be a similar line up that as it involves height.

i read on the Gladiator Reddit, I think it was Emily’s Dad that said The Ring has been phased out which is probably true as I don’t think it was played once all series, we also got barely any PowerBall which isn’t surprising as it causes many injuries.

I think they need a new ' multi gladiator' game to replace/provide alternative to Gauntlet and Powerball.

I like when they do the team walk, and it gives everyone more chances to take part in an episode and more chance for the audience to see their favourite Gladiators that might not have been used in a solo game that episode.
