Do you eat at restaurants alone?

Well, yes. I live alone, holiday alone and eat out alone, albeit the last two sometimes with friends. Who's going to care if they see you? I'm happy and don't care if there are any saddos judging as I wouldn't want to be them anyway. I like my own company and am happy to chat with anyone along the way. I really don't want to spend all my time with someone.

Pre pandemic and when I had a bit more spare money and wasn’t so wary of crowds. I used to go off on my own to cities for the theatre/concerts alone. So naturally I’d end up eating alone and being brutal I honestly preferred it. I can eat what I want on my own terms and not have to worry about pleasing other people.

I’ve got a friend who I occasionally go for lunch/dinner with who’s an incredibly fussy eater and when we went to London together in 2019 it was so hard trying to find somewhere there’d be something she’d eat and decent vegetarian selection for myself(not just a plate of bloody mushrooms)
I know this sounds really daft in a place like London where there’s every food in the world. But said person really Only eats pizzas and occasionally chicken burgers and won’t broaden their horizons. All this amazing food In amazing and different restaurants and we might as well have been in the town we live in. She’s a great person but a nightmare to eat with.

Yes! Every week I go to a cafe alone for coffee and lunch.
I used to find it odd at first but then I realised that literally no one cares about you sitting alone. It was a good time for me to read articles, relax and enjoy a coffee or some food without having to make conversation.

I wouldn’t. I’d feel strange sitting down to a meal in a restaurant or having a drink in a pub on my own - I feel these are social settings and sitting alone in a bar can draw unwanted attention in my experience. I have absolutely no qualms about going to the cinema alone however. You’re just sitting in silence watching the movie anyway. It’s different for everyone - not everyone is as comfortable and outgoing with it as others. 🤷🏼‍♀️
See, when I used to do it I loved it. Would go to a restaurant and have a starter, main and dessert all to myself. Loved people watching. One of the easiest places was actually Wagamama as they have the communal tables so you don't feel as "alone."

Yes have been doing so from a very early age maybe 18? I think back then some waiters found it weird seeing a young girl with no company. I was always a foodie though and not many of my friends were so I was not going to allow that distract me from delicious food. Now in my 30s, and the UK having socially evolved, nobody bats an eyelid. And I love that!

I must say though having taken a 2 years break due to covid made it a bit harder to get back into it but I don’t want to lose that confidence.

For those reading who haven’t done it but are curious, you can start with a little coffee break from work and build your confidence from there. For me it went from cafes, to pubs, to restaurants, to cinemas to solo travel.

Yes, I enjoy it. Pre-covid I used to do this more often but nowadays I don't eat out as much, it's almost always for a social special occasion. However it doesn't bother me and I like that I don't need to keep up conversation while I eat. I used to be a bit self conscious about it when I was younger but at the end of the day, nobody gives a damn. Everybody is focused on their own meal and company, and (imo) the staff can't really be arsed to gather around and wonder why some random customer is eating alone, haha.

I don't do it regularly, mainly because I don't have the opportunity.

It wouldn't particularly bother me, though I wouldn't sit and eat a 2 or 3 course on my own, mainly cos i'd get bored.

To those of you saying you think seeing couples sitting in silence over a meal is sad, my husband and I are that couple. Sometimes we don't have anything to say, we are perfectly happy and comfortable in silence together, we don't have to talk for the sake of it.

Yes, comfortable silence is way different to awkward silence. I also like comfortable silences, would rather that than pointless chatter for the sake of it

I never have done but only because I’m always with my kids, I think I’d maybe feel a bit awkward at first but I would relish the alone time at this point 🤣

The cinema is, in my opinion, a perfect "on your own" activity. Its not even remotely sociable.
I think that is a good place to start cause it's dark and you can't really talk with someone anyway. If you're nervous about it I would go during the last week of a film showing and during the day. There's been times where I've been sat in the whole screen by myself

I have done in previous jobs when I’ve travelled.

Mum really tempted to go on a weekend break on my own - l like my own company ☺
Pre-pandemic I used to do this 1-2 times a year after I had my eldest child. Book into a nice hotel with a bath (!), take a good book or two with me and lots of yummy snacks. And I usually have at least lunch and dinner on my own. Absolute bliss.

I'm fine with doing pretty much anything alone. I really wouldn't want to be at someone else's mercy (in case they didn't want to eat the same cuisine etc.). I certainly wouldn't let a total stranger's opinion dictate what I did with my life.
I went to a restaurant recently (where there were a lot of people on holiday), the waitress commented something like, 'oh you're all alone'
I really couldn't have given a single F. :ROFLMAO:

Yes, I quite enjoy stuffing my face in peace :)

Not just when solo travelling but even out for lunch in my city.

I do! I always wonder if they think I’m a secret shopper or a food critic and I think about it so much I actually believe it myself 😬
probably a good thing if they do so you get great service :ROFLMAO:
I often eat alone and have always done it (as an adult) without problems. I love taking a good book/podcast and just relaxing

I like company but happy also to do things alone. Pre pandemic holidays alone. So freeing to just do what you want and have own space. Happy to eat out, concert, theatres alone. Not saying it is easy at first. I live alone, so don't want to always wait for other people to do things

I so want to do this, book myself a nice hotel room when my son is away with his dad and enjoy the peace and quiet and luxury. Definitely going to

I’d (and have done quite a bit) in this country. I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing so somewhere I didn’t know the cultural norms.Like @phdoris, I am baffled by people who hunch over their mobile phone for the duration. It just scresms insecurity Back in a bit
