Funnily enough, it was his books that made me take a closer look at him and find him to be creepy as hell. It was the barely disguised disdain for poor people. As I was reading it with my son (who was totally oblivious) I could tell he was trying to emulate the kids vs adults theme common in Roald Dahl’s books. Needless to say, he missed the mark and just came across as hateful. I know there are things about Dahl that people find problematic (eg The Witches could be considered highly misogynistic) but there’s no denying he was a good author with some morality to the stories.My husband just started reading one of his older children’s books to my twins. If I’d checked it out before I started I wouldn’t have let him read it coz they are nasty. Last time they’ll read one.
