A warning some of the stuff mentioned (grape / surgical stuff) is a bit graphic - on Amazon prime there's a program called Alison. It's about a woman who was grape and almost killed

Such a brave woman

I watched a programme on Channel 5 catch up last night called Murder In Shetland - Trial by Jury . Interesting watch , quite upsetting in some places. I dont know how family members/friends kept it together whilst in court.

Going to watch it this weekend with my OH. I mentioned it on the Real Life Crime & Murder thread but forgot to put it here 🤦🏻‍♀️

Big ask I know but can any giveaway comments about it please be put in spoilers for now as I'm not familiar with the case at all? Thank you 🙏🏻

From the trailer, it looked very similar to the BBC's The Murder Trial. If you've never seen it, they're all on iPlayer - highly recommend. It's the kind of thing BBC do really well. I'm reserving judgement on C5's offering as I don't usually like their take on real life crime (too sensationalist)

You are right about it being similar to the BBC's version. I also really like the BBC programmes as well. I thought the C5 offering was decent and i also didnt expect much from them ( same reason). Once you have watched let me know what you think :)

Will do 🫡

For anyone thinking of watching Should I Marry a Murderer on Netflix .
You may have potentially already seen it .. it was on the BBC last year . The 2 parter is called The Vanishing Cyclist

eTA - it is a slightly different take on the case. The focus is different .

Came here looking to see if anyone had watched it.
I knew the story as I remember following it in the press & watched the BBC show last year.
You're right that the focus is different. How did she manage to make that poor man's murder all about herself ? Even the title was all about her.
She was undoubtedly in a terrible situation but she seemed to thrill at being at the centre of it all. She clearly ended up with serious mental health issues, if she didn't have them to begin with. Really feel for her parents.

Yes - I agree she did find herself inn an awful situation and I do believe that she was confused about everything.

I can see that the situation she found herself would be hard to deal with - as she wanted to do the right thing thing ( which she did as reported to the police ) and falling in love with someone ( although.. it seems she was falling in love with an "idea" of what sort of man he was).. I also think that she was failed by the Scottish police - the chap who kept bleating " but she was a professional and well educated " so we didnt think she needed support . Is he for real? It was obvious she was in a tit situation and needed help especially when she turned to drink and drugs to help her cope with the stress. It is all well and good saying well she should have left him.. That is coming from a rational mindset - she clearly didnt have that to be making a rational decision.

I do think that the focus should have been on the cyclist though and I preferred how this was the focus in the BBC documentary . Ultimately he is the one that was left for dead and then buried. All this because of 2 pissed idiots who were too cowardly to do the right thing , and get help for Tony Parsons and just take the rap being pissed at the wheel.

I went in cautiously and even then I switched it off after a couple of minutes, as I could see her gasping in the attention and her demeanour was off-putting. From what I recall of Vanishing Cyclist, she wasn't 100% cooperative of the investigation and was bleeping around with the police at some point. I don't know if that made it into the Netflix one.

Murdered or Missing Millionaire's Babies

2-parter on Prime -- very odd title but the documentary is very good. Horrifying and senseless crime.

In the Netflix show the story behind being uncooperative was explained as her having a breakdown and using drugs/alcohol due to the stress. Along with lack of police support .

I think she wants the attention & that is a reason for the netflix show. Stress? What about the poor deceased man’s family? How must they feel with her being filmed? She has changed how she looks & has had an upgrade. All for show.

Not one l’ll be watching.

I agree that the cyclist should have been the focus - ultimately he is the one who lost his life . Prob not as dramatic for Netflix though .. at least the BBC documentary did focus their attention on Tony Parsons.

Just watched the Press & Journal 2021 doc about the case of Shaun Ritchie, who went missing on Halloween night from a remote farm up in Fraserburgh, Scotland, back in 2014.

Such a frustrating case. 8 other people there that night, 5 of which were his close friends, and no one has spoken up about what really happened. I could fully believe it was a simple case of an accident and he ended up in a bog, but it's the fact there's no sign of his body, no one raised the alarm for 2 days and not a single person has said anything publicly, let alone try and drum up support to find him. It really doesn't pass the smell test and I'm genuinely surprised someone hasn't cracked and said something by now.

Seeing his poor sister break down was heartbreaking, can only imagine how much the not knowing has prolonged the pain of losing Shaun. It's so needless, it makes it feel like something awful must have happened for everyone to close ranks and not try and find their mate and give the family some peace and closure.

It can be watched here (for free), if anyone's interested
