Compulsive liars

I’ve got a good one.
This person I got to know ten years ago had started a business which was financed by the then current boyfriend. He also signed all the guarantees. They split up some years later but he carried on being her guarantor in new business premises.
Further down the line she wanted to sell the business it wasn’t doing very well by that time. I was interested in buying it. I asked to see accounts and she got her sister to type up a profit and loss. They were a complete fairy story. The lease was tit and the landlord was a nightmare, so I decided I would have to buy whole building.
Dealing with her and the landlord became more and more problematic (too many reasons to go into).
I decided to withdraw my offers to both parties, however as I am stupid and felt sorry for here I paid her rent for six months and gave her 10K to help get the business back to what it was on the understanding she would repay me back when able to.
Of course she never did instead she helped the new boyfriend buy a car which one day would be hers. Still hasn’t passed her driving test to this day.
She also paid for her daughter to go on holiday to Mexico.
The building did get sold to someone else who was much more lenient than the previous owner. He let her rack up over 8K in rental arrears before giving her notice to quit the premises.
She managed to get the 10K small business grant even though the business was not functioning by that time. The landlord went after the former boyfriend for the arrears. She also told the former boyfriend she had not received the grant.
The reason I’m writing this is because I found out last week that prior to moving here she lived up north and was convicted of embezzlement for over 150K and sent to prison for two years.
I haven’t told anyone just wanted to get this out. I’m so annoyed with myself and to anyone that reads this don’t ever be a guarantor or stupid!
I knew a man who agreed to be a guarantor of a mortgage of his brother's - I think it might have been a business mortgage. He ended up homeless because he couldn't pay when his brother defaulted.

Your MiL sounds so much like my mother and MiL combined! It's exhausting, isn't it?

---

I've worked with several people over the years who have lied about various things. It's one of the reasons why I try not to get too friendly too quickly with people nowadays, in all honesty (usually the passage of time will show these people for who they really are). One woman I worked with embezzled almost $1m to keep up appearances; another would listen to others' accounts of what they did on the weekend, etc., then relay those exact events to others as what she did on the weekend. There are many more examples.

One of my SiLs is also a compulsive liar and her kids are following suit. She really talks herself up - she'll say she's the manager of her department which her husband will then correct her on (it happens often); she's always reminding us how many friends she has ... yet when her husband organised her 40th (on a weekend), only 3 people turned up; says she's buying this, that, the other, or is going on holiday to some exotic location - then next minute is having to borrow money from her parents to pay her electricity bill. I think she's a fantasist in all honesty. It's getting dangerous now that the kids are doing it though - her youngest kid wagged school and when caught out, made up some story about how a man in a van had grabbed him off the street and dropped him off in the middle of nowhere, which had taken him all day to walk back from ... instead, he was doing drugs at some kid's house all day. Should have been charged for wasting police time - and drug offences! But of course my SiL's version of it all was that it was a big misunderstanding and someone else's fault it happened (it's always someone else's fault).

I think a lot of liars strive to be something they're not. It must be a very exhausting way of living in all honesty.
Not good if the kid starts doing it....
Is it a learnt habit? Or is it that they kind of have it in them as well?
As if they copy the lying they most know their parent is lying. It's a strange one.
Also, surely his mum would know when he is lying and recognise it....
Wouldn't a parent still be horrified at the lies or not care because they do it?!
Its such a complex thing.
Your right it must be exhausting. Surely they must be tired of it themselves...
A young woman where I worked gave me a story about a young girl's ghost haunting she and her boyfriend's home. She was only at the company for a short time. I think the agency employing us sacked her for getting into fights and arguments.

A young man stopped me in the street a couple of years ago. He insisted he'd known me from somewhere, then when I asked him where from and what my name was, he couldn't tell me. He then gave me a story about his very young daughter being on a life support machine run from the electrical mains at his home. He said his power was in danger of being shut off because he didn't have enough money, which would put his daughter at risk. Of course, he wondered if I could lend him something to help prevent that. I politely told him I thought he was full of it.
He's got some front! What a bold lie!
Wonder if he had any luck...
I wonder if he even had a daughter?!
This is such an interesting thread ! I knew a compulsive liar at uni , I was really good friends with her in my first year but when she started making up lies that my now husband (then boyfriend) was making passes at her (he would never, he didn’t like her) , I cut her off

she lied constantly: about her grades , she always had to do better than everyone else .. in the end she didn’t graduate the constant firsts on essays and assignments turned out to be lies , she lied about men she’d slept with and lied that men fancied her , she had a story about every boy on our course making a pass at her and professors too !! She lied about her family - she told me she had three sisters but couldn’t keep up with her lies and kept changing their names and what they did / where they lived .. she only had one brother !!

she lied about her mum being a successful journalist and millionaire (an easy one to catch - did she think we didn’t have Google?)

I didn’t live with her but she lived with 2 of my other friends , whenever she came to my flat she would steal my food … just open my cupboard and help herself and blame it on other people . I once caught her in my kitchen while everyone was outside having a bbq eating 3 bags of crisps in my Cupboard !

lies ranged from white and believable to outright ludicrous …she used to throw herself at my boyfriend and then lie and say he had made comments towards her , and that was where it ended for me ! It made him and me uncomfortable , and so I cut her off ! She moved out of my friends flat in 2nd year and we never saw her again

we’re still friends on Facebook and she sometimes likes my pictures etc etc , and when I got married to the man she used to throw herself at last October she commented on one of our wedding pics saying “congratulations Mr & Mrs Disney ! Hope you’re both well , didn’t think you’d last to be honest !” … which was a bit wtf !!

I think she must be quite mentally unwell , she never graduated and moved back to her hometown in Cambridgeshire and is still there , I don’t know what she’s doing but I hope she got the help she needed .. a really sad girl I think !
She sounds hard work and like the type to tell dangerous lies tbh.
Sounds like she doesn't like it that you ignored her lies and moved on with your now husband. How spiteful.
I worked with a woman for about 3 years who lied about absolutely everything. I made it my mission to prove everything she said was lie 🤣
Claimed to have given up smoking… conveniently started taking lunchtime walks just around the corner from work to smoke 😅
I was moving into my first house, she was also funnily enough buying a new house but couldn’t tell me where it was, was being sold privately so wasn’t on any of the property apps.
She had supposedly had double figure miscarriages and was apparently pregnant again and as soon as she was questioned by manager the next day she had a miscarriage but less than 24hours later was back in work with not a word to say about it.
I confided in her a some point that my mum was an alcoholic and then her mum was a recovering alcoholic to the point that if she had another drink she might die. Her mum died during her stint but by that point I didn’t believe it. She took a week off etc. Claimed her mum had started drinking again. Work policy changed not too long after that to state that you may be asked to provide death certificates in order to be paid leave. Wish it had changed earlier as I think it was all BS.
As to the cause… I think it stemmed from being jealous of her sister and maybe she wasn’t given as much attention as a kid as she hated her sister who was supposedly a witch. She also didn’t have much going for her, no friends to name of, just a partner who was also a bit ‘off’. She was a type one diabetic so maybe she missed out on a lot as a children And then started telling tales to make up for it 🤷🏻‍♀️
She sounds like the girl I was friends with for years. She had to have done everything I or others had. She had done it better. But it was obvious she hadn't. I now honestly have no idea what was true and what wasn't. There were so many lies.

I lied a lot when I was kid. It was because i liked the attention. Stuff about seeing missing items when someone said they had lost the item.

I also lied when I first started university, about what my parents did for work. It was because I was ashamed when i was surrounded by my close friends if I'm being honest. It's only now that I've grown older that I wouldn't lie or judge what people do in order to survive.

I know it's easier said then done but try not to be too hard on yourself. You didn't know. My own mother lent 5k to her sister who promised to give it back, but didn't.

How did you pay her the money- was it by bank transfer? Would you consider getting legal advice?

I was like this for a few years in my late teens. I hated myself and my life and wanted to be someone else so badly I wrote stories around it and just blurted them out left and right. No clue if people actually believed me or saw through my bull but it wouldn't have changed anything as no matter what I told others, my reality remained the same lol. I stopped because I was exhausted and no amount of momentary rush made it up to the stress and anxiety of having to keep up with an endless list of lies I've told others. Telling the truth or just not saying anything about things I'm uncomfortable with has been one of the best changes I've made for myself. I hope nobody got hurt or felt like a fool because of my own issues in the past. Thankfully my situation never got out of hand enough to get me imprisoned 😂

I think the difference is some of you helped yourself and recognise what you were doing.
Some people lie and can be dangerous and are still the same at an older age, they don't stop. I think the ones that tell dangerous lies and will not stop are the ones that I find worrying.

I had a horrific experience with an old colleague, in that she told the most awful lies about things I had done/ said... then when I denied doing/ saying the things she lied about, she then made me out to be a batshit crazy compulsive liar for saying I did these things in the first place. 😖 Absolutely awful time of my life. I soon left, but I heard through the grapevine that she had a massive falling out with her work clique- I often see them out and about and wonder do they realise now that she was the one that was a few sandwiches short!

I’ve sadly met a few compulsive liars in my time but thankfully they were incapable of keeping them small or believable so they ended up being kind of amusing in a perverse way.
One lad who was the king of bull at 6th form told us he’d been involved in the Hatfield train crash on the way to college that morning! We grew up in Essex and he had got very detoured that day if he ended up in a crash in Hertfordshire!!
Another guy told us he would get an A at a level history and he had been headhunted by St Andrew’s. He ended up resitting the year, got a D and went to a terrible uni and took 5 years to do a 3 year course as he failed every year once. He later told us he was a professor of history at a uni in China, however he sadly died in his mid thirties and in his obituary it said he was an EFL teacher in China. Such ridiculous lies and the irony was in both cases no one believed them in the first place!

I had a 'friend' who was/is a complusive liar. She accused me of bullying. Her mum challenged me once on my way home asking why I had slapped said friend in the canteen the day before (a day when I had actually been off sick, so had a great alibi). My own mum went mental. Didn't really speak to her after that.

Ok, so I LOVE this thread. I met my boyfriend and we had been together for around 4 years at this point. Told each other everything as you do. I had to travel for work, so boyfriend went to my sisters and her fellas for a few drinks. Came home after a few days and he was like ‘Er, why didn’t you tell me you had a miscarriage?’ I was like ‘EH?!’ So according to my sister, when j was 16 I had a miscarriage on a park bench, she rushed me to my parents house and they took me to hospital. Have only been pregnant once.
She is so deluded she rang me telling me my mum Had took loads of pills and tried to commit suicide. I called my mum and she got pissed and fell over.
I have never confronted my sister. No one has. We just know she lies.

Oh I got a similar eons ago at school when my supposéd Best Friend's loopy mother went in the school and insisted her daughter and I were separated in class because I was "copying her daughter's essays............................................." The school complied naturally but it's rather funny though because her marks instantly went dramatically downhill after this enforced move and mine remained the same, so what does that tell you?? :)

One of my sons had a similar experieince to yours though Saddlesoap when I receieved a phone call one morning demanding I go to the school immediately to collect him because he was apparently running riot around the corridors causing havoc! "Really" says me "Strange then that he's sitting right here beside me as he's got the dentists in half an hour!" Phone slammed down; They never did apologise for accusing him though :)

How good was that, that you had the day off!
Of all the days she could choose to make it up! Idiot. Did she admit she lied?

But she must have known you'd find out about your mum? That's what I don't get. Pointless and she'd obviously be found out.
Have your parents ever said anything about her lying?

A friend is a real estate agent and has lost count of how many people have lied about having the means to buy properties she's selling.

Anyone here (in NZ) can rock up to an open home (unless it's by invitation only), without having to prove they have the means to buy the house; but that doesn't stop people from spinning a yarn, talking themselves up and often getting her hopes up by saying they're going to make an offer. When she was new to the game, she got really excited, telling the sellers she had buyers lined up, which made her look bad. Of course you can't judge anyone by their appearance or by what sort of car they drive - nor can you go poking around into their financial affairs. In one case, a woman seemed so convincing, even putting forward a conditional offer (finance pending, which of course never came through). Apparently she had form for doing this, which came out when my friend attended an industry body meeting and it cropped up as a hot topic.

She often says now that she far respects people who are honest by telling her they're just visiting the property to be nosey.

I was in constant contact with my mum so I have no idea why. But the family are used to it now, we all know how she works and 90% of the family don’t talk to her. She will get the truth and spin it to make it more depressing I guess. More sadistic. Nothing is ‘just’ with her, it’s always so over the mark.

I used to lie all the time as a kid and teen. The main lie i made up was that I had 4 older brothers but i also used to say I had horses, various pets etc. I made out that I was a child model, played football for a youth club and even made out once that I had broken my finger.

This was all my fantasy life that I was living and I used to live it out in my head too.

I'm no longer in touch with anyone from my childhood and absolutely cringe at the things I used to lie about 😰😰😰
