I don't know if anyone knows this is starting today? Well the open ceremony is and bowls and para bowls are starting today

It was originally planned to be held in Australia but they had issues with funding so Glasgow are now the hosts

It'll be shown on TNT sports and highlights are on channel 5

I’ve just switched on the opening ceremony. Seems they couldn’t afford either Hazel Irvine or Andrew Cotter from the BBC to do the commentary (although I do recognise the commentators voice, I just can’t place it).
Odd that Channel 5 went off to adverts mid athletes walking in but guess that’s the price you pay for the BBC not covering this sort of stuff.
Nice to see the Duke of Edinburgh there

I'm giving the opening ceremony a pass but parking here ready for the games proper.

Sad it's not on mainstream tv, especially as it is in Glasgow. A lot of people don't even realise it's on. It was very well publicised when it was in Birmingham Sign of the times I suppose 😞

The coverage ive seen has been incredibly poor IMO, I expected too much or was spoilt by the Olympic coverage.

Well done to Wales Ruby Evans, a golden performance. Silver and Bronze to England too

I haven’t managed to get into it. Too much chatting in the studio, flipping between sports and adverts mean it just hasn’t caught my attention in the same way it normally would.

They are driving me absolutely mental. There's more chatting tit than there is action, unless it's boxing!

I'm on Virgin and can't get HBO Max unless I upgrade my box, by updating the software or something. But in doing that, it deletes everything I've not watched on my box, so I haven't bothered. It's the shittest TNT/Eurosport coverage I've ever seen. And the coverage also keeps cutting out, so there's a completely black screen - sometimes with and sometimes without commentary!

I’m going to email them to tell them how tit it was. Eurosport always responded when I complained, so let’s see whether TNT do!

I love athletics, but I’d never realised how annoying Euan Thomas is!

I’m off to Birmingham on Saturday next week. I wonder who is doing the European Athletics coverage?

Me and the old dear attended the opening and closing ceremonies.

We enjoyed the opening ceremony with the teams coming in. The gaelic band who provided the music were fantastic. The next bit about Glasgow/Scotland wasn't that great. Felt it was a bit poe faced and aren't we all one big happy family. Which we aint!!! Also Callum Beattie and Nathan Evans are far from the best Scottish music talent. And neither of them are Glaswegian!!!

The closing ceremony on the other hand was brilliant!!! I know the purpose is different, to have a big party, but it had a right balance of Scottish "cultures" the tradional music, the ceilidh dancing, Caledonia, George Bowie and the legendary Simple Minds. Who are Glaswegian!!!

But the main reason the closing ceremony was so great was the section provided by India!!! The lights, singers and dancers were all brilliant. They also included a Scottish musician which was nice touch.

I felt that India had no problem saying this is us! Where as in Scotland we don't seem to want to do that!!! We want to move away from the tartan and shortbread. But honestly that's an important part of our culture and heritage. We shouldn't be embarrassed by it.

Anyway!!! I would love to know how much the BBC offered for the TV rights and how much TNT paid. Cos the games suffered from not having the tv profile that the BBC gives. My cousins who live in England didn't realise the games were on. Whereas the BBC having been trailing the forthcoming athletics for a few weeks. There's definitely a feeling in Scotland if the games had been arranged in Manchester or Leeds, we'd have had wall to wall coverage by the BBC.

And I know it was on BBC alba but its not prime time BBC with Hazel Irvine, is it.

I'm in Birmingham too, coverage is back on BBC for the Europeans. It's a shame TNT got the Commonwealths though I thought for athletics it was ok, pretty much a dedicated channel for the athletics coverage and they did show the entirety of some races eg 5000m that sometimes patchy athletics coverage cuts. There wasn't a huge coverage of the field events though that is a common problem with athletics.

Overall I enjoyed the Commonwealths but I suspect the paired back version to allow Glasgow to host might become the new norm

I assume the dedicated channel was via the red button or online? As I’ve not updated the Virgin box, I couldn’t access it. I know they had loads of different TNT channels for something before (Olympics), so why didn’t they just do that again?

Do you have Virgin or Sky?

We've Virgin. The commonwealth games seemed to be across two TNT channels and when the athletics was on, I was able to see it mostly just through one of their channels. The 360 channel jumped around sports but the other channel focused on gymnastics at the start of the week, athletics in the middle and athletics/cycling at the end.
