The one near me is great too! It’s only the students that are pretty much ready to graduate (I think in their final year) that get to cut on actual people, so the standard is really high. The prices are amazing and mines does the same for the beauty treatments like manis; pedis and massage too! It’s also setup like a “real” salon / spa vibes, so it’s enjoyable to go rather than being in like a classroom / training room situation.
I wonder if you live near me haha, that sounds very similar with the spa vibes and it did feel like a little self care getaway for an afternoon!
Same with the beauty treatments, gel nails, all sorts.

Ooh I've always wanted to try these places for facials but never met anyone who has been to one, will check it out!

Found a new cheap thing I like - the local college salon staffed by hairdressing students.

Had a full head of highlights with a cut and style and they did a brilliant job. I have dark hair and the highlights are this gorgeous toffee colour, thrilled to bits with them! They’re blended really well, I was scared they’d be stripy or chunky but needn’t have worried.
Also had a significant chop, think underboob length cut to shoulder length and it looks great , very happy with it.

The whole lot cost £32. Trips to my usual hairdresser have cost £200+ in the past!
Totally recommend seeing if your local college has anything like this.
They’ve just opened up this at the college near us, for £10 you can have a massage or a facial and a cuppa. Don’t mind if I bloody do.

Haha we maybe do live close!
The college near me really is great - can’t sing their praises enough!! I’ve turned my mum and her friends onto it too. My mum has really thick / high maintenance hair and she says the cuts she gets there are as good as any high end salon she’s been to.

It’s crazy that more people don’t know that it’s “a thing”. I’m sure I read about it originally from Martin Lewis - it was in one his newsletters about checking out if your local college offer it! That was about 5 years ago.

Hah I didn’t know this was a thing. Definitely going to look into it. I checked the salon at a few colleges in my area. £12 cut and blow dry. Madness! My local salon is anywhere from £35-55. 💰 I am converted 💰

I've just checked out our local college... Can't believe how cheap the treatments are! Facials start from £5, even the fancy ones are only £10, massages the same. I may have to try it out.

Bit of a random one, but I still like burning aromatherapy oils, dropped into water with a tea light underneath? So much nicer than a Glade Plug In etc and a little goes a long way. I have no idea if these are fashionable or whatever, maybe old hippyish, but I love them. (Joss sticks, not so much!)

I used to work at such a college, I believe the low pricing is to cover cost and to book a certain number of clients so students have enough opportunity to do the treatments/hairstyles a certain number of times to meet their course objectives and gain experience. Definitely worth checking out, and at the college I was at, there was always supervision so it’s not as risky as you would think. We often saw the same faces come back, and then they would also come back to the student restaurant for lunches and dinners, as we also had catering courses.

About the beauty schools - do aspiring stylists go to specific schools in the UK? I've never heard of such schools here (Germany), people get training directly in salons (a concept called "Ausbildung"). They are employees of that salon and get paid, but not very much.
I'd love to be able to visit such a beauty school and get my hair done, but here it doesn't seem to make a difference in pricing.

You can qualify either in a work-based setting like an apprenticeship, or by going to college/school (there are different types of settings for this).
Getting a service from an apprentice or trainee stylist in a salon should still be cheaper than a qualified stylist.

I did some of the most meticulous cuts & colours of my life while I was at college - your passing mark is on the line after all and everyone is watching (tutors, other students, and their clients)! I'd be charging hundreds now for some of those services tbh.
Hand on heart, I don't think I did anything to any client then that I wouldn't stand by now.
We were always *desperate* for models to practice on and frankly by visiting colleges like that you're doing those students a huge favour, it's like a good deed really. They'll have done everything on mannequin heads lots of times before they get their hands on a human, and their tutors are always there and watching and won't let any service get to the point of no return before stepping in and fixing it themselves, and they won't let a client leave without checking over the work. I only remember that happening once (not to me!) and it was once the whole cut &blowdry was done, the client decided they'd like more layers, maybe a fringe after all, and the tutor just bashed it out dry to get the client moving.

there tend to be vocational colleges with a focus on btecs or apprenticeships that are separate from ones that do more 'academic' courses like a levels. from the top of my head the local college does business, nursing, childcare, construction/trade, hospitality, travel and cabin crew training (this one is quite niche), floristry, hairdressing and beauty, media studies, health and fitness etc etc. more hands on skills rather than technical knowledge, but obviously still important and valued skills. they're offered at different levels too, so you can go from GCSEs onto a level two or three course depending on if your grades are high enough / relevant to that course. but you can also have no qualifications at all and start at level one and be trained up.

Essence is a great brand I love their lip mask. Also Wilko Skin Therapy lip balms are so good and much better than more expensive brands.
