Cat constipation

Hoping someone can offer some advice please (don't read on if you are squeamish too poo!)

We had to take our 11 year old cat to the emergency vet on Tuesday night as she was being sick, growling at us and appeared to have poo stuck as it was coming out. They gave her blood tests and an Xray and it was confirmed she had severe constipation. They gave her a colonic irrigation and they said a little bit came out but she was better off at home waiting for the rest to come out. They also gave us a kit to do one ourselves (which we really don't want to do!)

Anyway she did a medium size poo about 2 hours after coming home which was Wednesday afternoon and nothing since. She appears to be fine , not growling, not being sick, eating her wet food. How long do you give it before you ring the vet back? She's our first pet and have never had any problems with her at all so its all kind of new to us

it's good that she's still eating and not hiding from you etc. usually it's nothing serious if she seems fine. it has also really only been 1 day since her last poo! however, i never like to wait with things like this. i'm always at the vet as soon as something happens and i think that's the safest thing to do. are they working morning and afternoon? if so, before you take her in the evening if she still hasn't pooped by then, i'd ring them now and ask what they think!

Just cost me hundreds of dollars with my cat at the vets to come home with castor oil to give 5 mls a day over three days . Did this . Results fed her oily fish to help with fur balls ect . Six months later she lost a heap of weight was attacking us randomly, she’s always been calm and passive . Was vomiting everywhere so back to the vets , more tests . She’s got irritable bowel syndrome, changed to wheat free diet and we have a different cat. So save yourself money try oily fish a wheat free diet and a fresh lamb kidney once a week to keep her coat smooth

This happened to one of our cats once and the vet told us to get lactulose from Boots and give a tiny amount. It worked a treat. You can't tell Boots it's for a cat or they won't give it to you as they aren't licensed to sell it for animals.

My cat had this and he was on and off the tray like a yo-you what his front paws on the side straining with his bottom in a the air. He was prescribed lactulose and I had to give him Tuna in sunflower oil he's been O.K. since. If shes not gone in another couple of days I'd ring the vets. Put plenty of fresh water out as well, to move things along.

Thank you everyone for your replies she has done a poo this afternoon so that's good. Just have to keep an eye on how she goes now. I've not heard of lactulose so will look into that. Going to buy some oily fish too, she loves fish so hopefully will help.

Poor little thing. Hope she begins to feel better, I’d be a wreck worrying and constantly checking the tray

Please call your vet and discuss it with them, or one of the nurses. They are best placed to advise you.

Our older cat suffers from stress constipation. She refuses to use a litter tray and will only go outside. Unfortunately that means if the weather is bad ( which is fairly regularly here) she will hold it in until she gets ill. We use laxapet when things get bunged up and I’ve also found since introducing a water fountain she’s drinking better and that moves things along.
