Career Change

Let me just be the Debbie Downer and put it out there....the grass is not always greener! We can't all have amazing jobs and do what we love.

However saying all that ofcourse you can make changes, try something different etc. My first question would be what are your interests? I always assume people who go into nursing are caring. Maybe you could look into becoming a retirement home manager. There are so many medical careers in different sectors - even a pharmaceutical rep! They make loads of money if they are good at their jobs.

Why not try a few part time courses (cheap or free ones) in different areas of interest to see what you enjoy. I studied business communication but actualy find that I love accounting and wish I had pursued that!

What about teaching? Could you teach the nursing course at a college/uni? My friend was a school nurse and recently did the 1 year teacher PGED course to become a primary teacher.

Very few jobs come up, and i've had a couple of interviews that i was unsuccessful with. I am in my mid 30s with small children, so i have limited flexability. I have no qualifications outside of nursing, other than GCSEs and A levels. I just need a change. And I would have no problem leaving nursing for that change. Leaving would involve a big pay cut initially. I've accepted that. However there doesn't seem to be any way in other jobs at the lowest entry level without qualifications.
Does anyone have any advice?

Could you go into the Management side? My friend was a Nurse but then became a Bed Manager and then kept progressing and is now office based in the NHS in the Management side?

If you have a degree you can do a year training and get paid for it with Teach First, I think it's around 18-20k for the year, but some subjects pay more! You don't have to do a PGCE at a Uni any more. I hope you can work something out.

Teach First is 2 years and you do have to do a PGDE (more credits than a PGCE) they also offer the option of a master's. In the second year you earn at least 25k. It's a great option, it is really challenging though - I have a friend who did it and it sounded really tough. You're placed in 'difficult schools' and from the off you are balancing classroom teaching with also the studying, so it's no mean feat!

do you have any idea what it is you would like to do?? There are lots of very entry level jobs you could do but would you want to?

I so want to change careers I fell upon working in financial services industry and I’ve been there 9 years. I’m desperate to change careers as I just don’t have the motivation and beginning to hate it. I just have 0 idea what I would like to do.

when I was younger I always wanted to be a teacher but I don’t know how I could do that now with two kids!

I don't know whether to apply for a different job. It asks preferably for 1 year experience in the job role. I don't have any experience but I think my current job has many transferable skills to the job/industry. I'm just in the thought that what's the worst that can happen I just don't hear anything? Annoyingly my laptop broke so I'm trying to do it on my phone

If you are interested in any other allied health field (physio, radiographer, midwife, occupational therapy etc) you will be eligible for more funding to pursue another degree. I know it's not ideal getting more student loans etc but a great option if it's something you're interested in.

well since then I have now moved to another company and doing a similar.. again not what I had in mind and not something I could do long term.
I would to be a teacher but I don’t think finances will let me go back to uni.

how about you? I bet dealing with millionaires is a bit of a challenge - high maintenance springs to mind..

Oh good! At least you took that step, is there any other route into teaching that doesn’t require uni? I hate how hard it is to change careers nowadays, it’s like if you don’t know what you want to do when you’re 15 then you’re screwed haha

yeah it’s a challenge and an eye opener!! Very demanding and .. entitled.. they’re nice people but I just can’t relate to them at all haha

I’m similar, I work as a PA in the finance sector.. luckily my role is very varied and I have different projects, so not just booking travel etc, but the thought of being a PA for the rest of my life fills me with dread! I also don’t particularly like the finance sector.. I’m not interested in it... I always wanted a job that I felt helped people, but to be honest.. helping millionaires wasn’t what I had in mind have you had any thoughts on what you’d like to do/could do? xx

Following with interest. Currently working in merchandising which I do enjoy but recently the stress is relentless, getting a pay rise or promotion is ridiculously difficult and competitive and work life balance is zero.


Can I ask how you got to the detective constable process?

direct entry TDC process, hasn’t been the greatest success - well dependant on what force....

I’m currently starting training to be a social worker and learning disability nurse. In the meantime I’ve got a not too exciting job as a nighttime personal assistant to somebody in their home.
It pays the bills while a train and I can sleep when by husband is at home or when my kids are at school.

Is there a possibility you you look for different job that would work while you are doing additional training?

Hi. Yes I got a more senior job in nursing at the beginning of the month. I think i was just frustrated and needed more responsibility.
