I've got a Ford Fiesta (2017 one), I cannot fault it, it's cheap as chips to run, insure, and any repairs are also cheap as everyone can fix a Fiesta. It's my fourth Ford overall. Husband has a Mini, it's his second one, both have had many expensive issues. The current one (2016 model Cooper) needed a software update (who knew!) which only the dealer can do. It's a nice car but cost-wise I'm glad I don't have it. I used to care about what my cars looked like but I'm too old for that now, I just need efficiency & reliability!

Similarly to your original comment, my colleague had a Renault (Captur if I remember right) which kept breaking down, she swapped it for a VW Tiguan which has been more expensive but more reliable.

Prices definitely gone up. I bought my 2005 plate car in 2019 for £500 and just looked now and they are selling for between £1-1.5k for the same age and similar millage

Long story short, I've got a 2020 Renault Captur and it's a piece of shit. It's broken down three times in the space of less than a year of having it.

I'm looking to get rid of it and get something else. I just want something reliable. It's only me and my 5yo so it doesn't have to be anything big. At this point I'll take anything as long as it gets me from A to B with no fuss. My only requirements are petrol, manual, 5 doors. Looking for ideas on what to have a look at and what to avoid. I will absolutely not be getting another Renault though.

Same! This is what's annoying me. It's money I'd rather not spend because I really like my car, but I think the money spent fixing it would be better invested into something newer. I've had my current car for 10 years, and cost me £5k for a top of the range 5 year old family hatch, so maybe I'm just living in dreamland.

That’s what I thought but my dad convinced me to invest in what I have now since prices of newer cars are so high. I’m hoping they’ll go down soon. Had to spend about 1k overall last year to keep it going but was only £25 to pass the MOT this year. I’m glad I listened to him as I wouldn’t have got a good car for the same price or with what I have saved and hopefully it’ll last at least one more year. Should hopefully have enough for next year if needed. My cousin recently bought a new car and is now paying a loan off for it, didn’t even bother to see how much her current car would’ve been to fix and it was only around 10 years old maybe younger
