See my granddad was the opposite way. I'm 99% sure he was told he was dying but he never let it slip. He went to appointments alone so not to worry my grandma and carried on all the way through. The christmas before he died, we could tell he looked ill. But when he died it was a huge shock. He was in hospital for 3 days and I distinctly remember him telling us the scans didnt show any new growth. But what he hadnt told anyone was there had been so much new growth before that. His organs were failing.
Honestly, I'll never know how we would have reacted if he was honest with us from the start but I'm always comforted knowing his last few acts was to try and protect us all.
