A girl I went to school with used to work for Emirates and left in bad circumstances. She hinted a few times online about what a terrible company they were and her mental health was so much better now. She was very glamorous.

She started at another airline but was unfortunately made redundant midway through covid.

I'd love to be nosey and get the tea from her

I’m happy to answer all your questions about Emirates. I used to fly and now I am passenger flying around 3x a year. It’s very strict with each flight 100% monitored. The lipstick and nail varnish is called Emirates red and all salons in Dubai know the colours. Nails have to be naturally manicured, french or Emirates red. Hair has to be a “natural colour” balayage is not allowed. Skirt length is measured and personal hygiene is monitored. Drinking before a flight is forbidden and you have to stop drinking 12 hours before. If you get caught you are “dead headed” on a flight and sacked on the spot on return.
Some funny stories are that lots of passengers have never travelled such luxury and Indian passengers that have never been outside India in particular LOVE a freebie. There was one in particular that “wanted the gift bag you gave to that lady” I insisted he didn’t need it and he insisted he did. He flew with a sanitary towel over his eyes thinking it was an eye mask.

Sorry, how is personal hygiene monitored? Do they come and sniff your armpits?

Maybe not all of them but I’d say a high percentage of both cabin crew and pilots will have been on the lash the night before your flight

Do they have to have a breathalyser before going on duty?

This feels the right thread to say that the 19 hour Qantas Perth to London Dreamliner flight is a marvel of engineering but I do not like Qantas' economy seat product on the 787. Slighty more leg room but almost a centimeter narrower than their economy product on the A380s and other long-haul planes. I'm curvy and found it v uncomfortable for the long flight.

On the plus side, it's Qantas, and they do long-haul service and food very well. Other great economy options for Aus to Europe - Ethiad, Emirates, Singapore. Not that anyone is flying to or from Australia at the moment

Has anyone actually flown business or first class?? I just don’t think I could justify it unless someone was paying for me (lol) or I became a billionaire and money wasn’t really an issue, I’d rather have the money to spend on my actual holiday but I’m so interested to hear about people experiences if they have and if they think it’s worth it

I was upgraded by a mate once and flew first class with BA to Hong Kong. I felt like such an imposter From the moment I got on the aircraft they plied me with Champagne, I had a meal of several courses with wine suggestions and after I eaten I snuggled down into the bed thought "This is great, I can live this life" ... and that's the last thing I remember before being woken up for landing. I'd slept through the whole flight - I'd never been more disappointed!

I've flown business class a few times with United and back when they were Continental. My dad worked with clients in the US and flew with them regularly as the only airline that flew direct to the states from our nearest airport. The first time we flew business was when my mum and I flew out to join him for a weekend and then he upgraded us using his miles for the return flight. I was about 14 and it was fab! A couple of other times we have been premium economy and my dad was always called by the desk for a free upgrade if there was a business seat available. Even happened to my mum one time because we were flying on my dads account even though he wasn't with us. Was only ever one seat though

I used to love it because when I studied abroad my dad booked all my flights and I could always use the priority check in queue and got to board early even though he wasn't with me.

He's retired now so we don't get the perks but it was fun while it lasted. Always feel a bit ill when I'm booking US flights and I see the price and think about how my dad flew SO much that we used to go on holidays to the US fully on airmiles. Mad. (Also just to clarify this was maybe twice. Not a regular occurance lol)

One of my extended family was high up in British Airways for years and knows someone who was on a flight with Leonardo DiCaprio in first class. He was allegedly charming to the cabin crew and then ordered and drank two or three whiskies in quick succession while his manager/agent was having a nap

I think that’s the travel industry as a whole. My friend worked for TUI, not cabin crew but as a rep. All elements of their appearance was dictated, down to the colour of bra they wore under which top.

That’s bull I worked as a rep for TUI and had none of that. There were uniform guidelines as any company with a uniform has but nobody was ever pulled up on what they looked like

My friend worked for monarch back in the day and I remember her being regularly weighed and being told which red lipstick to wear. Make up was a big thing in the 90s
