Broken, flyaway hair

Anyone have any tips to control the mess on my head?!

It seems like the top "layer" (is that even the right word?!) Is broken and sticks up, even after I try and straighten it.

My hair also gets greasy quite quickly.

Has anyone had a Brazilian blow dry, how have you found it? I have extensions, so unsure if I can get that. Will have to ask my hairdresser once Boris let's them open up.

Cheers!

Are you sure it’s broken or could it be new hair? New hair tends to not have any weight to it at all and flies all over the place. Trust me, I’ve got tonnes of it at the moment after losing a lot of hair earlier this year 😂 might be wrong but it just sounds a bit like it from your brief description

I have always had this issue too. The only thing that really helped with the greasiness was cutting my hair quite short. For the flyaways DEFFO invest in a wet brush and brush your conditioner through your hair when it’s wet. I was finding I was getting a tit load of breakage when I was brushing my hair wet but brushing it with conditioner makes it more manageable. I also alternate between shampoos and I only put heat on it maybe twice a week. On the days I don’t I always let my hair air dry with oil.

Hair extensions are so bad for you an that is most probably why you have a lot of hair breakage. Do not have a brazilian, they are really bad and have even been linked to cancer.
I found the following shampoo helped with my greasiness but it's expensive, Kerstase Specifique Dermo-Calm Bain Vital Shampoo.

Although you should wait 3 months to see a difference when you change shampoos I saw a change within the first wash

Oh it could be! Do you stick yours down or let it roam free?

Never heard of a wet brush! Cheers will look into that! Eek I don't know if I could cut my hair short, so used to it being long!

I'm thinking once I have got my years worth out of them to have a break and see what my hair is like.

Thank you, will take a look at the shampoo!

Second wet brush. Then the Denmans tangle tamer paddle brush when it’s dry, or if you can afford a Mason-Pearson, but honestly the Denmas is a good alternative for about 1/6 the price. Brushing from the root helps to distribute the oils in the hair. Try to keep your hands out of your hair, especially to roots and avoid any product there to help greasiness.

I’d expect the extensions will be breaking your hair near the root causing the flyaways and you’re not going to escape that.

I use hairspray to keep the little bits stuck down. Spray and then smooth down with fingers. The Lee Stafford Coco Loco 1 in boots smells like coconut 😻 🥥

I've just started using NAK for oily hair - it's amazing! I was using Joico - the one for fullness - which worked well, but I found if I didn't wash my hair every day it started looking really awful and oily. With the NAK, I'm washing it every three days, and using their dry shampoo on the in-between days. I'm very happy with the results so far.

I might give this a go - my hair seems to get oily so quickly. I try to wash it every three days but only if I’m not doing much because by day three it really does look grim!

Extensions won’t be the cause of this, as you have stated it’s the top layer of your hair, extensions to my knowledge (hairstylist) are never fitted that high up.
It sounds to me like new hair growing through, you can pat it down with hairspray in your palms or alternatively get a big round brush and blow dry the cuticle smooth directing the hair and the airflow downwards and set with cool air.
Your shampoo and conditioner could also be adding to the problem if they aren’t right for your hair type.
Batiste is your saviour when it comes to grease, although you need to persevere, I find some of the different smells/flavours aren’t as effective as others on my hair, for example the cherry one does absolutely nothing for me.

edited to add: when using conditioner keep it away from the root, mid lengths and ends only

OP I feel your pain! Also does anyone else find the underneath hair at the nape of their neck is really broken? It’s so short and always falls out if it put my hair up - it either never grows or just breaks off. So frustrating!

Definitely going to look into this myself! Oily hair is the worst and the bloody bane of my life. It makes me self conscious that my scalp smells musty!!!

I would change up shampoo, the kerastase resistance shampoo would be brilliant for your hair type and also would help it to grow, you might feel more comfortable giving up the extensions then :) they do Christmas sets so you might get one with shampoo conditioner and a treatment cheaper this time of year!
I would also maybe consider a good supplement like hush and hush deeply rooted which is made specifically with hair health in mind. Make sure your using a mask one a week and always use a heat protector spray before your straighteners 😀 xxxx

Always difficult to say when you can’t see or feel something in front of you, but I would suggest a hair extension break, that wouldn’t cause any harm although it is unlikely to be the cause anyway. I would also give the straightening/heat a rest, are you preparing your hair before you use these to stop the flyaway or possibly breakage.
Depending on your method of hair extensions I advise not to have a Brazilian at the same time as the keratin can affect the ‘bond’
I notice a comment further down this thread says they cause cancer.. I can tell you that is NOT true. Personally I recommend Milkshake KRespect smoothing treatment.
but see what your hairdresser has to say when we can all get back! Soon yay

Lol last time I tried to blow dry with a big brush, it ended up all tangled in my hair! I'm so cack handed. If I won the lottery I would be spending it ina salon to get professional blow-drys!

Yes, I have that too! Stupid wispy bits on the tip layer of my hair, and annoying short bits at the back. Just to make it look even more of a mess!

Ah thank you, I will mention it to 🎅! Hint hint!

Currently sitting here with olaplex on, see how that goes!

Yep, use all the sprays etc due to having the extensions in.

Is that the one that smells like milkshake? I think my hairdresser uses it! I have an appointment next Thursday, can't wait! I had an appointment in 🔐 so is well overdue!!

Just seen this thread but I have the same type of hair as you it sounds like. Mine is fine and fly away. Has to be washed every day due to getting greasy. I had a great hair disaster in 2017. Too much bleach led to snapped hair like yours. I had to not get it dyed or highlighted for over a year. I had to put weekly treatments on and not use heat as much as I could. I used redken products and they have saved my hair.

I get loads of flyaways on mine, I use a tumble drier sheet to keep them down 😊 since 1996 this has been my go to trick, quick sweep over & ta dah!!!!
