At least it isn't 200 right??

I have 199 unread books on my Kindle. I thought 100 was bad enough, then I thought 150, but no. The books kept on going and I was hoping not to reach 200. And I didn't, just.

I have no idea what most of these books are or why they are there.

There shall be no more 99p deals for me. Not a single one.

I was going to do a random number generator to pick my book but I figure you lovely lot are as random as they come. So the first person to post with a number between 1---199 will be the book I read.

Remind me though No.More.99p.Kindle.Books. NONE. Not even one!!!!

Folks, I’m a longtime lurker on tattle. Usually using it to read about the influencers we all love to hate. But this thread is new favourite place on the internet and inspired me to register as a user so I could join the conversation. The shared love of reading is heartwarming . And I love the lack of pretension. As someone who reads everything from the literary romcom to Pulitzer Prize winning, I feel like I’ve found my people. Those who aren’t afraid to challenge the emperors new clothes effect of the virtually unreadable but critically acclaimed, who share a love for the lighthearted and fun (as long as it’s well written)! And it’s clear to see that being amongst such lovers of literature (and it’s all literature, snobs be damned) is motivating and inspiring for all.

Thank you also for introducing me to borrow box. It might spare me for giving Bezos all my money!

I tend to listen to non fiction and read fiction. For some reason I struggle with audio fiction. At the moment am listening to Uncanny Valley (about a third through and a bit bored already tbh) and reading Mrs March (feels very Mrs Dalloway thusfar but I believe a twist is coming!)

Whoops! Just accidentally spent £72 on The Works. Got that Joanna Lumley - A Queen for All Seasons, a H. G. Wells boxset and then 24 books from their 3 for £5 deal.

Not like I've still got a shelf full of books I still need to ready already. That's definitely not the case.

My end of the month round up

Daisy Jones, Evelyn Hugo and Verity were all 5 star reads for me. Verity is a bit of me anyway and the others I rated highly in surprise, because they aren’t the types of books I’d usually go for and yet I really enjoyed them.

The other stand out for May was The Rule which I’d really recommend. A sad but tense book.

Most of the others were 3 and 4 stars.

So I'd been noticing that when I'm going to read my book at night I'm further on than I thought I was, kept having to go back so many pages etc.
It's only now dawned on me, I've been falling asleep with my kindle in hand and tapping the pages by accident... it's so touch sensitive, like overly sensitive.

Would say though there is huge diversity on here of what we read so you definitely dont need to be reading the same book as another poster to join in.

Also its good to talk about because I bet the majority of us have read something discussed here that isnt the type of thing theyd usually read and enjoyed it.

Any book read is a triumph I say in a modern world where we seem to be glued to screens. Whether its something heavy and wordy or something light and trashy.

Stuck in bed with the Rona Thankfully seems to be very mild (so far) but am using it as an excuse to stay put and read. Downloaded The Paper Palace so I could join in with Book Club and am utterly hooked. Already 40% of the way through.

I'm absolutely swayed by Good Reads reviews. Most of my TBR have 4 or 5 star average ratings and I tend to agree with the reviews...up to a point. I always rate on Good Reads after finishing a book but rarely write more than a few words in the way of a review.

Also very influenced by 'Bookstagram' and now by you guys on here . Is there anything better to spend money on than books???!

I also think, in addition to the sexism in breaking down by genres, there’s a classist approach as well, in readers and authors.

“Highbrow” or “lit fic” are stereotyped as being for a certain class whereas “chick lit”or romance are stereotyped as being for a certain, often implicitly, lower class. It might be different for people from other countries, but as an American who studied literature in university, there was definitely a classist approach to literature, again implicit.

I agree there’s a divide between what’s “acceptable” to watch is different to what’s labeled as chick lit to read.

Reading is reading, and people like all sorts of things! As a teacher, it’s so hard when I hear my students say they don’t read and don’t like books. I often wonder how many of them were never encouraged to find what world they preferred to join when reading, be it science fiction, crime, thrillers, romance, whatever because that genre was viewed as being less than by whomever was encouraging them to read or discouraging them from certain genres.

Anyway — happy reading today, whatever that may be!
