Hiya, I’m new to this thread. Just finished reading the whole of this thread, which was a bit of mistake really as my wishlists and TBR piles have already grown as a result!

I’ve been in a reading slump for years, partly due to having my son (he’s six now!) but actually even before that my finished lists was not great and I think it’s down to smartphones, too easily distracted by the internet.

Last month my friend bought me ‘marshmallows for breakfast’ by Dorothy Koomson for my birthday and I was determined to start reading it right away rather than put it on the bookshelf with everything else to stay unread for years!!

I then heard about stuff your kindle day for the first time, and the world of booktok! And it got me excited to read again. So I stuffed my kindle (which is actually just the app on my phone at this stage) and read a couple of short ones on there (purposely chose the shortest ones first so I could get through more books quicker) and then a paperback which is usually my preferred book. Since I finished Marshmallows for Breakfast (ok but a little dull plot wise) I’ve also finished The Hike (mostly good) and I’m now on The Simple Wild (loving it so much already), all paperbacks. I definitely still have a preference for paperback but the kindle app helps when I’m struggling with putting my phone down! I’m tempted with a proper kindle but I want to be certain I get the use out of it. For some reason a 350 page book on my kindle app feels epic compared to 350 page paperback? Not sure what’s going on there psychologically 😄

I’ve got Before My Actual Heart Breaks coming in the post which will be my next read, that was recommended on this thread so I’m excited for that!

Woo! Target achieved with 3 months to go!! This is the most books I’ve ever read in a year - last year was 81 and the year before was 65. I’ve barely read for two months so I could have reached this earlier but been in such a slump. Climbing my way out of it now though 🎉🎉 Going to aim for 100 next but also have 114 in mind as I’m currently 24 books ahead of schedule so if I keep up the pace that would take me to 114.

I don't do audiobooks but I checked Spotify and it suggested Thursday Murder Club for me, despite me telling it lots of nice books I'd loved - I was hoping it might come up with something better. Everything else I asked for wasn't there, and the alternatives it suggested to me looked shite, so I've started listening to Thursday Murder Club because it was free.

GOD! Is this an audiobook thing- the overacting? I can't bear it, the hamming it up, overdoing it. I feel sorry for blind people having to access books this way if this is representative.

It makes my teeth hurt just thinking about it, and I'm only three chapters in!

Is this normal?
i’ve always struggled with fiction audiobooks tbh! i can do non-fiction ones and really enjoy them but, like you say, the narration can be so hit and miss and it means i can never fully engage with fiction in the same way. i know there are a lot of audiobook experts here though who will be able to hopefully recommend something better for you.

Ugh it's on my list now as I want to see what I think about it, how shit did you think it was?
i wrote an essay here about it once 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

i will summarise: bad writing, manic pixie dream girl heroine who learns to read in two days and grew up alone in a marsh but somehow has amazing social skills and her entire town is just in love with her because everyone is somehow in love with her including the most popular guy in town who obviously would never be interested in a girl who has never left her actual swamp home, she also is taught to write in a day by another teenager but she like only goes to school once and social services never check on her and everyone knows she lives alone but they’re like urgh that’s just marsh girl and [rest of post redacted before poster gets carried away]

If you have Spotify Premium, you can now get 15 hours of audiobooks included with your subscription.

I just had a quick look at what was available and there is quite a mix.

Not the best month for me. Baby Finch arrived and I don’t see how I’ll ever have the brain capacity to pick up another book again 😂

🤣 and don’t forget your harem of gorgeous men stephen! you could put them to work in the library for you.
I'll be sliding down those ladders on to their dicks. 😆😆

And I'm not sure many of them would even know what a book is. Lando? Pato? They don't read. 😆😆

Congratulations! This reminded me of when I gave birth many years ago, I actually packed about 3 books in my hospital bag 😂 obviously thought I was going on holiday not to the hospital.

I have all of the Agatha Raisin books but have I read any of them yet, no I haven't and the reason is that I want to read some of my other books first although I have quite a lot so it could be awhile before I pick up an Agatha book.
Books can be aspirational items as well as functional items. We can have them both to read and as things we seek to read. Though it may not be this week, this month, this year, a book will always be read when the want, the need, the moment is right, and then it will flow into your soul and be fulfilling at the right time.

Never force reading a book when it isn't the right one for the moment.
