My relationship with my mum broke down when I was 10/11 after her and my dad split for the last time and he moved out. I'm an only child, I spent every other weekend with my dad, 5/7 nights a week she was drinking multiple bottles of wine a night with her friend in the kitchen while I sat in the living room about 10ft away with only a glass door between, crying loudly to the neighbour and slagging my dad off. (He didn't do anything horrific btw, just had enough I think). The neighbour would try and comfort her then have to go back to her own house and family, I would go up to bed and she would come in my room and start ranting away at me being generally neurotic and on one occasion breaking some of my things. Most of the time she would eventually leave me alone but several times I had to call my dad to come and get me as I was scared. If the neighbour wasn't available she'd just sit with the phone book all night for hours on end doing the same but to her long distance friends, after 6pm and hanging up and calling back every hour obvs cos free
This carried on until I eventually moved in with my dad, step mum and step sister when I was about 15. Still used to spend nights at hers in the week, she would do the same then threaten she was going to adopt a kid in my place then make me feel guilty when I got upset at this idea (as my dad pointed out this would never be allowed to happen).
I must point out it wasn't all bad times and she was a great mum, thoughtful and fun to be around besides the above, tea was always on the table and the house was clean. Things are a lot better now I'm older, and I love my mum to bits but she still clearly has a problem with alcohol and I rarely spend the night at hers even now as she can be unpredictable although 90% of the time it's fine. I like a drink but won't touch a drop when I am staying in case I need to leave so will go and see her in the day or have her stay at ours as I know she will behave.
We have found a level now as we both want a good relationship but she will never admit to any wrong doing and refers to the above as when I 'flounced off to live with my father' as if it was totally unprovoked and she was the victim
Nowhere near as awful as some of the other posts on here which made me sad to read. What I always find ironic though is at the top of the stairs in her house she has a book called 'Toxic Parents' as she is convinced hers were. (I've never met any of her family as she disowned them all many years ago, but that's for another thread
