I have a girl and boy aged 2 and 3. They have quirky names, I won’t list them as it will be very outing!

We went to a party at the weekend and met another girl with my girls name, both me and her mum couldn’t believe it!

I recently had a baby boy and found the boys names sooooo much easier to pick out

Both my partner and I have Uber common names and we didn’t want that for our children. We prefer slightly unusual or “old people” names.

On our boys list: Jasper, Wilbur, Wilf, Hector, Errol, Ralph and Barney.

Girls list: Verena, Amaranth, Noelle and Peony. 🤍

Love this thread! My kids names aren’t traditional but they’re not too out there. I’d love another girl though and I’d call her Wren or Marlowe.

Ooh I'm enjoying this thread! I've not long had a baby girl so I'm reading through whilst doing a night feed, wishing I'd seen it for some ideas before having her I have my baby girl and a toddler son, I won't reveal their names here but they're pretty traditional and popular overall but I liked and chose them because I don't personally know anyone with their names.

Names I liked but didn't use (but might in the future, I'd love a 3rd baby eventually!) :

Me and my partner only had 3 names on our list as we knew we were having a girl.
We both liked layla but we thought it was too common and I loved lyla but it sounds too similar to liar . We both have L names and wanted our children to be the same but it would’ve been too hard for a boy in the future if we ever had one. In the end my boyfriend chose her name and he went with isla which is very similar to lyla. We don’t know anyone with the name even though it’s currently really popular.

I love isla but someone at work called their baby it just before I gave birth.

My daughters got a friend called Layla, shes a little shit

It is funny as I am childfree (choosing not to have children) but definitely have names picked out that I like.

Same! We usually have names that have been in our family before. I love Lily Alice (great-nanny and grandmas name) and Thomas Alfred (brother/uncles are called Thomas and Alfred was my Grandads name).

My problem would be not choosing a name that an animal I’ve owned/know has.

I made the same mistake as you and told people what I was considering naming one of my children. It was a family member and they were really quite rude about it. It put me off too. I didn't make the mistake of telling people with my other children.

My nan responded with 'well I'm not very impressed but it's not my choice' when I told her my sons name he was 6 days old when we named him. She adores him, but she was caring for my grandad at that point so I blame stress for her response

I’m not currently pregnant or planning a pregnancy. But my boy name I have picked out was my fathers middle name and something of a family name and my girl name is oddly some may think my dog who I sadly lost last year. She meant the world to me and my mother named her and it’s actually a lovely name.

I don't think it's weird at all, dogs are angels and if you want to use the name, go for it, i think it's a lovely idea.

100% agree with your general principles here, hate when people change the spelling just to try and be different so the poor kid has to constantly explain it’s spelt differently! Same re Isla - way to common now and I’ve started seeing people spelling it ‘Ayla’

Isn’t Ayla pronounced different to Isla though - the ay as in “pay”, whereas Isla is eye-la.

my old neighbour has a little girl called Isis, she must be about 6/7 now

I’m child free (by choice!) and have no plans to have children. That being said two names I have always adored:-

Violet
Thalia

Our first niece has been born this year named Violet which is beautiful. Definitely now a very popular choice.
Now to work on some other family member to use Thalia
