Anyone else dislike the gym?

It is not my favourite thing but I live in a Country that’s very hot for about 7.5 months of the year and so it’s necessary.

@Antonio I know you used to use the same gym as K in Rome and I just wanted to say I got YKW comments removed from TripAdvisor as he made scurrilous remarks about my uncle’s gym in Positano. Was it a nice gym? It would be good to communicate about it as I might need to use one but seems impossible. On the other hand I don’t need a gym when I’m working in Venice. With all the bridges etc I clock up over 20,000 steps on my FitBit thereby making the gym redundant. If you get what I am trying to convey.

Swap gyms and always ask for a tour of every gym that you consider joining so you can assess the feel of the place.

I love my gym because it’s fairly small and has a very laid back, calm feel about it. There is a section where the macho wallies who are obsessed with lifting the heaviest weights hang out and everybody else uses the rest of it and it friendly. It’s incredibly clean - the staff cleanthe equipment every hour or two and customers are asked to spray and wipe everything after every use.

As part of my membership, I can use other gyms in the same chain But I hate the next nearest one - it’s big, noisy, feels dark even though it has adequate lighting and has that horrible boys club atmosphere. The staff still clean it but it ‘feels’ dirty somehow. I just stick to my most local one because I feel comfortable there.

if joining a different gym isn’t an option, have you considered switching to the classes run by the gym instead? They’re not for me (I hate classes) but you might enjoy a mixture of things like body pump and body attack with the lighter classes like clubbercise and Zumba.

I find the atmosphere of going to the gym really quite off putting. It’s such a macho vibe which does not suit me and I never feel properly comfortable. There’s just not much that’s warm or friendly about it that makes me want to be there.

I’ve been doing some sessions with a personal trainer for 6 weeks now. I’ve tried my best with it but I am beginning to get bored of doing it so often and it’s a bit awkward to interact at times. I also am getting the feeling that he’s a bit annoyed with me now. I’m trusting his advice with things as he seems to know his stuff and I don’t want to question his expertise but some of it doesn’t make tons of sense now and it feels like we’re moving too quickly with progress on some machines (and then I can’t keep up). And using the machines, whilst I can feel the benefit, I don’t really enjoy it that much. I just want to start dancing to the music quite honestly (I know that sounds crazy).

When I came in this morning and saw him, I overheard some staff at the reception saying something like ‘gotta be diplomatic with that one’ which I thought meant they were gossiping about me being a difficult customer (which I’m not - I am quieter and might not pretend to be anyone’s BFF but I am polite and try my best). That doesn’t give me confidence to use a gym on my own volition if they think I’m some sort of village idiot.

Another thing - maybe it’s just them trying to be motivational or whatever but I cannot stand when you see people there and they say things like ‘ready to smash this?’ Don’t know why but it really bugs me. It’s the kind of ‘bro’ talk that I always avoided being around growing up.

Anyone else hate it? How do you manage with it?
Im a keen keep fitter although I've never done gyms but this sounds like hell to me. If you've paid in Advance I don't know but whatever, I definitely wouldn't be going back. Good luck (y)

Me! I just don’t see the point in them. I don’t actually know anyone who uses them either including the guy who was a professional sportsman for a while. He did everything at home, for free and did just fine.

And they smell.
