Are you based in the UK because a lot of what you’ve said is a HR persons wet dream. So many laws and regulations broken in that call alone.
If they ever write anything down then keep a file but you can also use your phone or apps to record teams calls so that sounds like a disciplinary at the least from when you’ve said

What are the laws in your country regarding sick leave? In the US employers are not permitted to tell us "sick leave is not allowed".
I’m in England. I’m sure it’s legal to have time off sick. The two bosses say it isn’t allowed and manipulate by saying, if you call in sick think of everyone else, I’d drag myself in etc. but I was madly distressed early last week and she told me to my face I wasn’t allowed time off. She was nice to my face and said she didn’t want to send me home in case I felt worse sitting around but this was after she told me I wasn’t allowed anyway!

I love this information. I was sure it was wrong but they seem to be openly happy about it and it’s messed with my mind. I’ve got a message saying it but the comment about it not being allowed I have no record of that but I think they’d believe me

Get in touch with ACAS. This is a tribunal waiting to happen. Statutory sick pay is a legal right and this person is on a hiding to nothing.

Thanks all, very grateful for all your comments. I told area manager this morning, who knows what I might have started!

Take the time out, and assess all your options. It sounds like a dreadful place to work. Your health is so important, above all else.

If I remember correctly, aren't you a nurse? So working with vulnerable people? Surely being ill around them isn't good so you have done the right thing. Don't let them make you feel bad for being ill. You need to look after yourself before you can look after others x

I am! You are completely right, it’s a big problem to go in when ill, anything could happen

Are you NHS or private? I've worked in many NHS trusts and I've never heard of anyone being told they cannot go off ill. That is ridiculous, we are entitled to sick leave by law.

I am in the NHS, and I can’t understand why my bosses think they can say this! It’s madness to me

That is madness.

I think sometimes, even in the public sector (with its clear HR rules and HR departments), some managers go rogue and try to impose things which aren't in line with the actual rules.

And those are the type of managers who have to stand up at employment tribunals!

Well done you for reporting it! It's absolute lunacy that they're saying this in the NHS of all places!

One of my brother's inlaws works in local government.

During Covid, their manager was so determined to get everyone in his department back into the office that he was making up fake email chains pretending they came from upper management saying that WFH rules didn't apply to his department.

When he got found out, it was only a verbal warning as, "He was so passionate about the job that he wanted to do what was best for everyone."

During covid, the senior management team in my work had a whole meeting about 'isolation length if someone is exposed'. I asked why they were having that meeting when there were laws about that in place already - surely you'd just follow whatever the government rules were at the time.
They said they wanted to make their own decision.
I was like - right well you can't ask people to come in before the end of the government mandated isolation period... They looked at me like I had 2 heads!
This was office work BTW, hardly life or death.

Friends colleague was sick / pulling a sicky and their manager kept ringing them up and sending texts asking what antibiotics they are on... Even if someone is pulling a sicky, managers still need to play the game.

I can’t understand why managers care so much, if you work in a big company or the NHS or similar, why would you decide it’s your responsibility and business to force people in? It’s not your own business (even if it was, that isn’t OK) I don’t get why they need to be like that, just do your job and let HR/Occupation health manage everything else!

Having just left the NHS after 14 years nothing surprises me about it anymore. The trust I left was only just bringing in mandatory training in leadership for newly appointed managers which is 25 years behind the commercial sector. Some of the managers are excellent but there are a lot who literally turn up for the pay check and have no people management skills and they are just dreadful.
One of our managers refused to manage a situation where a staff member refused to learn the computer system thus meaning they couldn’t do the majority of the role. Too much like hard work to have a difficult conversation so they let it go on for 5 years with the team picking up the slack. New manager comes in and this waste of space is out within 6 months tormenting a new team!

Because they can only manage a team that is sitting directly in front of them. Having to do so remotely, via work flows and metrics is beyond them.

Yes it's always the managers who love being in the office (either they hate their wives or have no life outside of work) who need to see people in front of them for the feeling of control.
