I can't get over how many people play a different role in the interview (i.e., their best selves), compared to when they get the job.

Our past few hires have been impressive at interview but then once they get the job they are anything but. I don't get it - we've done all the background checks which they've passed with flying colours, yet as soon as they get their feet under their desk it's like they're swapped out for someone else - a less energetic, interesting version of themselves.

We always mix our interviews up with a couple of different interviewers - alongside me ... it seems wrong to blame the candidates, but I'm not sure what we could do differently.

We're also facing a lot of resistance from people who won't consider a job unless they can work from home 100% of the time.

To align with market trends we have agreed to a hybrid working arrangement (3/2 one week, 2/3 the next, repeat ...), but it comes with conditions, one being that you must get up to speed and show us you're trustworthy to work from home, first (depending on the person, this could take weeks or months). Plus, you must attend the monthly staff meeting (which concludes with drinks - it's as much about briefing everyone on what's happening as well as team building). Candidates have actually turned jobs down because they aren't prepared to agree to these terms.

To be honest, that happens on both sides. The interviewers drone on about why they love working at such a kick ass company and how many exciting projects there are for the right candidate to take on. New employees starts to a weak AF onboarding, a disinterested manager who deserts them in lieu of weeks of online compliance training, and as the novelty wears off, the new hire ponders whether they were actually better off where they were.

At the end of the day we all bring our best selves to the interview. Candidates and interviewers. The truth lies beyond the exaggerated BS.

Most employees want hybrid or remote. All the lunch n learns, culture weeks and motivational speakers are no substitute for extra hours in bed/gym/with kids etc and comfort of your own home instead of asinine chit-chat with lacklustre colleagues.

Hybrid/remote isn't a trend. It's a smarter way of working that's here to stay. Gens Y & Z won't do 5 days in the office again.

I’ve been on annual leave and I’m back to work tomorrwow. I have a knot of anxiety in my stomach about it Especially nervous because of one coworker in particular who is absolutely horrible and makes me so nervous to be around. I’ve seen a job I’d like to apply for but I need to give 4 weeks notice and she will make my life hell… so it’s putting me off applying. I feel so stuck!

So I applied, interviewed and have been offered the job. I’m handing my resignation in on Monday. We are a small team so I am shitting it, feels like break up!

There are always going to be people who don’t or can’t work effectively from home (or take the piss) but the answer is not to demand everyone return to the office which appears to be the knee jerk reaction.

Exactly this I work with a woman who does 5 days in the office because she is very extroverted and enjoys being front-facing. I WFH 2-3 days per week, depending on what's going on at work. She spends her time engaging everyone and anyone in idle chit-chat doing just enough work to stay out of trouble. Yet she's praised as the backbone of the company I'm very productive at home and I'm certain I accomplish far more in my day than she does. Yet she's lauded for coming in. This outmoded thinking has no place in a contemporary office.

i'm so tired of whatever you eat/drink in front of co-workers being commented on. i'm slim and always have been, so colleagues seem to think as you're obviously not overweight it gives them free reign to make remarks on anything.

I thought I’d start on a positive and the woman who has annoyed me for the last nearly decade by refusing to learn how to do her job and relying on everyone else to do it for her is finally leaving!! I think our new manager got rid of her by taking all the stuff she enjoyed off her and then making her do the basic admin (which she still couldn’t do because she literally cannot multitask). She is now off to a new team who I don’t envy one bit!

Someone at the office I'm "temporarily" assisting copied my manager on an email she sent that was intended to get me in trouble for something. But when it turned out I was right she did NOT copy my manager on her apology and statement that I was indeed actually right. So I forwarded it to my manager.

Nice try, lady. And way to make yourself look like a horse's ass yet again.

Does anyone else ever tire of the facade of corporate culture? All the fakery, forced bonds, plastic smiles, hustling, competition etc. My company just laid off a load of colleagues as a money saving exercise. I'm safe for now but straight away they're waxing lyrical with the old clichés of "stronger than ever" it's all so disingenuous given we've lost some really good colleagues. It feels tone deaf and hammers home how pointless all the politics are. It all just feels like a big pile of s**t at the moment...

Colleagues making contact outside of work hours. My work phone pinged this morning at 08:41. Colleague asking me to send them something that they need for a 09:30 meeting tomorrow. I'm really strict about only working my contracted hours so I haven't answered

Received another message from same colleague at 10:16 about the same thing. I start at 10:00 tomorrow so it will be radio silence from me until then. I don't care if I sound mean its taking the piss contacting me on sunday morning plus they wouldn't dare contact the manager on a sunday. Respect for the manager but not for me.

Putting a good word for HR in here. I am 52, fat, straight, very discreet, not a gossip, work full time and have never been to a pilates class. I am in HR. We tend to shovel the shit that management can't be arsed to deal with so we get the flack. I do get that a lot of HR people are cunts though, I work with some of them.

I have a colleague who does absolutely fuck all and has done absolutely fuck all for the entire time she’s been with the company. She went straight on maternity leave not long after being hired, came back, straight on second maternity leave, came back, nearly straight on long term sick, came back, practically never does any work. My manager does absolutely nothing about it, just calls me to bitch about her and then does nothing, I don’t know how she’s getting away with it. She calls in sick at least once a week, when she does work she logs on about 11 then is away all the time on teams but think she just moves her mouse every now and then, logs off early afternoon and says she’ll do the rest of her hours in the evening and then nothing gets done in the evening either. I’m absolutely sick to death of it, I don’t know how or why my manager is letting her get away with it. I’ve just come back from annual leave and we’re now super behind on work so I’m gonna have to do overtime all week and most likely work the weekend too and I’m just so done with it. Earlier this year I was working until 10/11pm every night and then doing Saturdays as well and the overtime pay was lovely but I’m really not willing to go back to that again, why should I have to pick up the slack just because she doesn’t work? She doesn’t deserve to be paid for doing nothing, how hard is it to just fire her ffs??? Sorry, ranted a bit here but I’m just so fed up with it all. I have combined ADHD and really struggle to motivate myself to do work but I still do it because I fucking have to, it’s my job!! It’s so unfair that some people can get away with this

This is definitely just a bit of an ick rather than something that annoys me, but people who put an out of office on when they go for their lunch break. You’re not that important love, just show as away for an hour, it’s allowed

I’m in an absolutely shocking mood so this might be me, but so many colleagues (and people generally) seem to be obsessed with pointing little things out and being unable to just let people do their thing. Walk into work ‘ooh treated yourself to a coffee?’ ‘Did you park your car closer today?’ ‘I don’t know where you get the money to buy coffee so often’ ‘you are early today!’ ‘Why are you in such a good mood?’ ‘You look tired’ ‘what are you doing for lunch?’ On and on, leave me alone. It’s like people have to say every thought they have!

Handed in my notice today!!! Feel like a weight has been lifted now I have a new job, woo hoo. I know I'll probably swap one set of annoying colleagues for another set at the new place, but a change is as good as a rest right!

So my useless colleague is off again and has apparently booked 2 weeks leave over Xmas as well which could possibly put a stop to me having time off.

I decided enough was enough today and have forwarded all her emails about her not going into the office because she's caring for her dad to the head of department (bypassing the manager who does nothing)

We'll see if anything gets done about her now.

Where I work (local government) they offer extra training opportunities for those who meet diversity criteria.
I was in a meeting the other day where someone mentioned it, then they said 'Scotch you're the only person in this room who's ineligible' wow thanks for reminding me.
All of the people in the room were on a higher grade than me to start with!

I work in an office and there's this girl and when she laughs she always says "ahh dear" at the end of the laugh. "hahahahha....ahhh dear!" It makes me annoyed and it's completely irrational, and because it's irrational I get annoyed even more because it's something I shouldn't be getting annoyed about!! ahhhh dear!!
