My teen chose history as he loves it, but the teacher is so uninspiring, it's ruined it for him. Even the Germany WW1 and WW2 interests him, but the delivery has ruined it. They are doing the American West which is my obsessive period, well jealous.

I had a boring, parrot fashion history teacher, then the powers that be started one lesson a week of a young teacher who just chatted with us about the period and really made us think and articulate about it. Even though we wrote no notes it all stuck in our heads.
Strangely this teacher said to us that he was only doing teaching until he found something he really wanted to do!!!!

ETA maybe if you chat with your son about it it will bring it to life for him and reignite his spark for it.

History was taught so badly when I was in school. For some reason it just seemed to be loads of iron age forts.

It's recent history but the 'back in time' series on BBC2 - anyone catch that?

I really liked this particular one channel 4 did and I have the DVD.

I like how the Vindolanda tablets they found at Hadrian's Wall aren't all military notes or official missives. They're shopping lists, bitchy letters and party invitations.

People have been very much the same for a very long time.

Teachers make such a difference - I didn’t do history at school because it was so dull

Medieval Madness on YouTube is great for an insight into the day to day life of ordinary folk.
I love royal life and famous people but there's something intriguing about how regular people did their shopping, made clothing and communicated.

I find it interesting that, in the UK at least, we seem to spend more time learning about Henry VIII than anything else. Which i sort of get because he's important for a few reasons, but there are a lot of other things which are either more interesting, just as important or both.

I wish I'd been taught about The Anarchy, if only because the Empress Matilda was such a fascinating and important figure.

If you're going to be lax on historical accuracy it would make more sense to choose a subject that doesn't get taught to literally everyone in the country.

Has anyone managed to watch King & Conqueror yet? I've been looking forward to it soooooo much and am so disappointed that it appears they've made a completely different story up. I am just listening to an old Rex Factor podcast and they've mentioned the Mary Queen of Scots film and The Favourite and how they are both historically inaccurate. Why do they do this?!!? Obviously some poetic licence is allowed but there are so many amazing stories in history that you couldn't even begin to write why not stick to that or if not then do something completely new

I find plagues fascinating too. Especially when the include polio. I kniw of two people in our community who contracted polio in the late 1940s and were left with lasting damage.

I'm currently working my way through the podcast The Rest is History on my long commute. It's bite sized snippets of history and if I like the sound of a topic, I can make a note to delve further into it myself when I've time.

Alison Weir was fascinating - I’d love to be able to write but just don’t have the patience for it. I didn’t realise her new book was fiction but I have a signed copy now which is exciting!

Perhaps some of us have lived many times? I love pre-history as well, when I was growing up we hadn't discovered the 'missing link' yet but now there are so many different types of human.
Medieval, Roman times, lately the Tudors and always anything Scottish are my favourites. Anything to do with plagues is always a hit too for some reason. Can't help what I like.

My cat is called Susan but her real name is Boudicca as I couldn't get enough Boudicca when I was little. I loved her story.

I’m fascinated by the Russian Revolution - I love a random like!

I have a family member who had a cat called Boudicca!!!

I’m going to see Alison Weir tomorrow night talk about her new book about Thomas Wolsey and the ticket price includes a copy of the book!! Very excited.

I've read a few of her books, that sounds great!
Mary Beard is doing a tour of Australia later on this year, I'd like to see her too.

I really love pre-history as well. I like Stefan Milo's YouTube channel for prehistoric content.

We obviously lived at the same times as I'm drawn to all that, plus Irish things. I always seem to like irish names too. My last car was named Finbar.........

This episode made me cry. I won't spoil it but I think it will emotionally effect even the most cold hearted of us all.

As always with Matt this was a well researched podcast and presented in a way that was interesting with every sentence, instead of being dry and droll like so many history podcasts can be.

Unfortunately I fell asleep not long into it! That happens a lot. I'll be listening again later today when I'm feeling a bit less tired.
