I was coming back from swimming lessons and we heard it on the radio. Does anyone know if there’s any new docs coming out or recommend any maybe I haven’t seen?

I’m not sure how accurate that is actually - at least in the UK. The mother of one of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombings continues to campaign for better and consistent security checks to big events because they are so variable and often not good enough.

But yes, you’d hope yesterday in NYC checks would have been thorough.

Yeh there is very little security in the UK, I mean look at the chaos at the World Cup match, people were just able to storm in. I love live music and have been terrified since both bataclan and Manchester, I still go but it is always in the back of my mind

These days, everything major event is caught on film, and nothing seems shocking any more but back then, it was pretty unheard of to see anything like that on the news.

I've said before that I think 9/11 was the first "social media" event, looking at it in hindsight.

I wanted to say that I wasn’t implying that the people who had taken footage were ghouls trying to profit from tragedy - I think there would have been so many documentaries made in the years after that they had invited anyone with footage to submit it.


I was talking to my husband about her last night, I’ll have a look at that. Things like that interest me so much - what’s the psychiatric background of someone who goes to such great lengths to pretend she was immersed in one of the worst tragedies of all time

it is very bizarre, I wish they had gone more into the psychological aspect of it tbh, in a way the case reminded me of that woman who pretended to be black (cannot remember her name) but it is still a fascinating watch

I also read this article every so often around the time of the anniversary. It’s a great article and gives you an insight in how one man managed to save over 2,000 people. I remember visiting the memorial and seeing a white rose and thought that it was from someone who knew the person then I noticed a number of white roses and I heard someone explain and I immediately choked up it just made it all the more poignant

i just looked this up. How devastatingly, delicately poignant.

I was at work and the FD rang my HR director. He had a TV in his office. We watched the second tower being hit in disbelief, like a horror movie taking place live.

Here in the UK there were plans for a tower to be built for our financial business to be built in London. It was scrapped after 9/11.

One day in America (national geographic) is phenomenal. Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but highly highly recommend.
Shows FDNY trying to figure out what to do... they would hear crash after crash and realise it was people...falling. absolutely heartbreaking.
Just makes me so sad.

I've just watched this, that sound was awful. I was too young at the time to take it all on so watching them all now as never really understood it all

I’m sorry lovely, didn’t mean to make you cry! Thank you for reading it, I don’t know why but I just find his story really interesting and the fact that he knew this would be a problem and worked hard to make sure people were as safe as possible. He was a remarkable man.

I also meant immune in regards to terrorism in general, the fact it’s become such a, well not regular but frequent thing in our lives since 9/11 first happened, - not 9/11 itself. Hope that makes sense!

Like I said, I do know what you meant . Time obviously does change the impact of those images. It's just that, especially this time of year, it all comes back to mind again and I feel almost transported back. Horrific things are happening all over the world right now and you do become kind of 'hardened' to it because the images are so much more accessible. Sad as it seems, it often feels like 'some other country, far away' (I'm guilty of instinctively feeling this), when the USA and the NYC skyline is so 'in our faces' and has been for decades. Think 9/11 was striking because we were watching it unfold live on TV in a way that had seldom been seen before. We were watching people dying in real time, in such a visible, graphic way.

Seen a new documentary, recently and it involved a woman who survived horrific burns from the WTC attacks who had a young tot at the time. He's now a very angry young man and an additional 'victim' (been diagnosed with PTSD) because even though he was too young to know what was happening at the time, he's lived with the aftermath and watched his mum suffer through all his formative years. Thankfully, his supportive dad is around and still with his mum. I hadn't really given much though to the children of survivors at the time and was more aware in terms of those whose parents/ family members were actually killed. So sad.

I went to a gig in Manchester the week after the bomb and I have never seen anything like it. But yes, it is extremely variable. I have been late into to see bands due to queuing because of security through to just a quick flash of my handbag.

I was 11 and remember watching it on my Grandma's TV in her living room. I definitely didn't take in what was happening at the time.

@Damita that’s a very good point about it being used to radicalise people and one I hadn’t considered.

It was literally the only reason I can think of. It can't be purely down to copyright because most material on Youtube is copyrighted and stays up for years at a time.

Although it could just be Youtube being powermad because they can, they do that a lot now.

MSM documentaries don’t cover enough. This video is well hidden (she starts about 4 mins in). I don’t know what happened to part two, it used to exist. Even if you believe none of it, it is still remarkable.
